10 Shogun Warriors Facts, Marvel Comics Giant Robot

45 years ago, giant robot comics were first introduced to the United States. The giant robot figures are told as guardians of the Earth and become heroes of peace to fight against evil monsters. In fact, the existence of this giant robot has long influenced pop culture in the region. The first giant robots were introduced as Shogun Warriors. Not only quite popular in the comics industry, Shogun Warriors also evolved the toy industry in the United States with sophisticated robot toys full of various attack effects at the time.

1. Shogun Warriors Origin

Shogun Warriors are giant humanoid robots introduced by Marvel Comics for the United States. The appearance of this robot comic is based on the Mattel Inc toy line entitled The Shogun Warriors. They licensed the robot from its original creator in Japan. After obtaining a copyright license, Marvel Comics finally published the Shogun Warriors series in just one year.

But at the beginning of its appearance, the giant robots were first popular in Japan. At that time, the Mazinger series was very popular even in America. Seeing this potential, Marvel Comics proposed a partnership with a Japanese company, Toei Company so that Marvel Comics could use their franchise, and vice versa.

In the end, Toei Company used the Spider-Man franchise to create a live-action series, while Marvel Comics used their giant robot license from the Mazinger to create their own IP called Shogun Warriors.

2. Consist of 3 Robots

Unlike the Transformers, the Shogun Warriors robots were actually created by a mysterious organization called the Light Followers. And all the robots they make are controlled by selected human operators from around the world to fight against evil monsters known as Kaiju. The Shogun Warriors comic series features three giant robot characters, including;

Raydeen, piloted by Richard Carson, an American stuntman
Combatra, piloted by Genji Odashu, a Japanese test pilot
Dangard Ace, piloted by Ilongo Savage, an oceanographer from Madagascar

3. Only 20 Issues Published

Marvel Comics published the Shogun Warriors series from February 1979 to September 1980. There are 20 issues released from 1979 to 1980. The Shogun Warriors comic strip was written by Doug Meonch, while the drawings were done by Herb Trimpe and Dan Green.

4. Marvel Comics' First Giant Robot Comic Series

Shogun Warriors is the first giant robot series published by Marvel Comics. However, it is not the first robot owned by Marvel Comics, because the first robot owned by Marvel Comics is Leopardon, a giant robot introduced by Takuya Yamashiro, the Japanese version of Spider-Man.

5. Doesn't Have Super Powers

As giant robots, the Shogun Warriors do not have superpowers like current Marvel superheroes. These giant robots only have the ability to destroy which is their main weapon. Starting from missile launchers, fist launchers, missiles, shuriken, and even throwing an ax. The main strength of the Shogun Warriors is the transformation that allows them to transform into different forms.

6. The Beginning of Transformers

After Marvel Comics released the Shogun Warriors series, they finally decided to make their own comic about robots. Marvel Comics then released its comic about robots entitled The Transformers in 1984. Interestingly, the Shogun Warriors series also had several names that were eventually used in The Transformers series, such as Megatron who had become the enemy of Shogun Warriors.

7. Included Several Other Marvel Superheroes

The interesting thing about the Shogun Warriors was that Marvel Comics also uses some of its superheroes in the story. One of them is the Fantastic Four who are present as guest characters in the comic. The collaboration was certainly carried out by Marvel to encourage sales of the Shogun Warriors, because at that time the Fantastic Four became a comic series that was quite in demand in the United States.

8. Megatron’s First Introduction

In the Shogun Warriors comic published in July 1979, Marvel Comics introduced a giant robot named Megatron. Unlike the Megatron in Transformers, Megatron in Shogun Warriors looked rigid with a golden color. This is where the origin of the name Megatron who became Optimus Prime's sworn enemy in the Transformers series.

9. Shogun Warriors Toys

As one of the robots in the Shogun Warriors franchise, the three giant robots were released as toys produced by Mattel in the late 70's to early 80's. Raydeen, Combatra, and Dangard Ace were released along with the Mazinga and Gaiking robots.

10. Never Re-released

Although it has become a comic series released by Marvel Comics, unfortunately the Shogun Warriors franchise has never been used again by Marvel Comics. They don't even include the iconic characters from Shogun Warriors in other comic series. This is likely because the contract period between Marvel Comics and Mattel has ended. So Marvel Comics decided to create its own giant robot comic series using the name Transformers.
