Solo Leveling is a widely popular South Korean comic. The story is written by Chu-Gong and it’s of the fantasy-action genre. The story was first published as a web novel on Kakao’s digital comic and fiction platform, KakaoPage. On this occasion, Dunia Games would like to give you a list of the 20 fascinating facts about Solo Leveling that you probably didn’t know. Perhaps those of you who haven’t heard about the comic will be interested in following the story.

1. A “Manhwa” Not a “Manga”

Do you know the difference between Solo Leveling and other comic books? Whereas Japanese have 'manga', the Chinese have 'manhua', and South Koreans have 'manhwa'. All of them sound similar, yet these terms just show the country where the comic book is created and published.

2. Was First Released as a Novel

Before it became a manhwa, Solo Leveling was initially a novel with the same title: Na Honjaman Lebel-eob (나 혼자만 레벨업) and written by Chu-Gong on 14 February 2014 and finished with 14 volumes and 270 chapters. Whereas its manhwa was first published on 25 July 2016 on KakaoPage.

3. A Refreshing Plot

This manhwa starts with the opening of a gate between the world and the monster's world. Now, among the humans, there are some who are blessed with special abilities that help them to eradicate the monsters, often referred to as "Hunters". The story follows Sung Jin-Woo’s adventure as the weakest Hunter to become an S-Rank Hunter.

4. The Weakest Hunter

Sung Jin-Woo starts his journey as an E-Rank Hunter. Because every time he is in a dungeon, he often gets severely injured or even dies, becoming a laughing stock among his peers. In an incident in Double Dungeon, when he’s trying to solve the System puzzle in the final trial, he’s abandoned by his peers who fled to save themselves. He’s supposed to die right then and there, yet fate says different as he manages to solve the quest from the System. Since then, his destiny as a Hunter starts to change course slowly.

5. A Humble Main Character

Despite being the weakest Hunter who received a tremendous amount of power, Sung Jin-Woo remains humble. On top of that, he also has a high sense of protecting others, because his main goal is to protect his family.

6. There are Multiple Tiers

In this manhwa, there are different types, tiers, and jobs of Hunters. There are 4 kinds of roles of Hunters from Fighter or Assassin, Tank, Mage, Support, or Healer. As for rank, there are 7 layers of Ranks from E-Rank, D-Rank, C-Rank, B-Rank, A-Rank, S-Rank, to National Level or S+Rank. The tasks and jobs of these ranks are also different from the Attack Force, who hunt monsters, the Mining Team who mine for new valuables in the dungeon, and the Collecting Team, who are tasked with collecting monster carcasses.

7. Two Important Organizations in Solo Leveling

When you first read this manhwa, you’ll learn that there are 2 big organizations that accommodate the Hunters. First, we have the Hunter Association, an organization that regulates and controls all Hunter activities, including monitoring the gate. Each country has one association and leader. The South Korean Hunter association is led by Go Gun Hee. The other organization is the Guilds, which are groups of monster hunters. Usually, there are several teams based on the rank and level of difficulty of the gate. In addition to that, Guilds also have their own Mining and Collecting Teams. A Guild is led by a Guild Master and a Vice Master.

8. Jin-Woo The Dual Dagger

Since his early beginning as a Hunter, Jin-Woo has chosen to become an Assassin as he wields two daggers in combats. The reason why he chose to become an Assassin is that his father, Sung Il-Hwan,  inspired him to. His father disappeared into a dungeon in a Seoul amusement park. His father was also a dual wielder.

9. Dramatic Physical Changes

After surviving the highly dangerous Double Dungeon, Jin-Woo has a reawakening and unlocks an enormous hidden power. Since then, every day, he receives quests from the 'System' that he needs to complete. These quests include 100x push-ups, 100x sit-ups, 100x squats, and a 10km run. Thanks to these quests, the once scrawny Jin-Woo slowly gets more buffed. These quests from the 'System' grant rewards upon their completion, yet if you fail them, you will be sent to the Penalty Zone and have to survive from the monsters for 4 hours.

10. He Made It to S-Rank Within Just 3 Months

Due to his strong will and his ambition in carrying out the quests, Jin-Woo becomes stronger than before. Within only 3 months, he manages to reach S-Rank and become the 10th S-Rank Hunter in South Korea after Cha Hae-In 2 years prior. As a matter of fact, once he reaches this Rank, Jin-Woo’s power has surpassed the average S-Rank Hunters.

11. Refused to Join a Guild

Sung Jin-Woo once returned to the South Korean Hunter Association after a long time since he was assigned as an E-Rank Hunter. He returns to reevaluate his Rank, much to the surprise of many once they learn that Jin-Woo’s powers cannot be gauged by the machines, thus putting him into the S-Rank. Many Guild Leaders try to snatch an S-Rank Hunter for their guild, considering that he’s not associated with any guild at the time. Yet he refuses these offers.

12. Got Promoted to Shadow Monarch

When Jin-Woo completed the job change quest, he instead became a Mage-Hunter, with the specific role of a Necromancer, and then got promoted to Shadow Monarch. By turning into a Shadow Monarch, he gains the skill called Shadow Extraction, which allows him to summon Shadows of killed creatures such as magic beasts or humans to fight for him. This is also what helps him to go solo during Raids.

13. Jin-Woo’s Shadows Have Levels

Shadows (Geurimja) are Jin-Woo’s personal army that he received once he became a Shadow Monarch. These troops have different levels, from Normal, Elite, Knight, Elite Knight, Commander, Marshal, and the strongest being Grand Marshal. These ranks also increase as Jin-Woo levels up, as well as their appearances.

14. Other Non-Monster Creatures

In this manhwa, aside from monsters, demons, non-demons, and shadows, there are also other creatures like the Rulers, angel-like creatures that represent the light. There are originally eight Rulers. And they can inherit their powers from several hunters who are reawakened. Aside from that, there are also Monarchs, which is the opposite of the Rulers. Monarchs represent the dark and are also originally eight. Monarchs can also inherit their powers to reawaken hunters like Jin-Woo.

15. Jin-Woo’s Romantic Relationship with Cha Hae-In

Sung Jin-Woo and Hae-In have a special relationship. Since their first encounter in the dungeon, Hunter Cha had fallen in love with Jin-Woo after getting Jin-Woo’s mana scent, which is different than other Hunters’. Whereas Jin-Woo falls in love with Cha’s powers and keen sense of smell. After that encounter, you can see they interact, communicate differently, and even went on a date at an amusement park.

16. He Once Resurrected an S-Rank Hunter

During a Raid on Jeju Island, one of the strongest S-Rank Hunter as well as the only healer, Min Byun Gyu, was killed by the Ant King. Since Cha Hae-In was badly injured, Sung Jin-Woo was forced to resurrect Min Byung Gyu to heal Cha Hae-In. Once he’s done, Jin-Woo released Byung Gyu’s shadow to the spirit world with a smile.

17. Cha Hae-In is a Dancer

Hae-In is a fighter who wields a longsword. It’s apparent that she’s a powerful fighter. Due to her combat proficiency, she’s nicknamed 'The Blade Dancer'. Jin-Woo also believes that Hae-In has the potential to surpass their Guild Leader and even match the former Head of the Hunter Association, Go Gun Hee’s. Evidently, she eventually manages to become the second most powerful Hunter in South Korea, replacing the late Gun Hee.

18. He Had Killed Humans Several Times

Aside from slaying monsters, Jin-Woo had to kill humans on several occasions. Most of them were Hunters who posed threat to Jin-Woo position, thus the 'System' gave him quests to kill them. Some of them are the 8 Hunters in Hwang Dong Suk’s party, Kang Tae Sik, Kim Chul, and Hwang Dong Suk in Chapter 147.

19. A Family Man

Although he’s known as a cold-blooded Hunter who slays monsters or even Hunters with no mercy, Jin-Woo is actually a loving man who cares deeply about his family and close friends. From the beginning, his main goal of becoming a Hunter is to pay for his mother’s medication. He once left a dungeon raid upon knowing that his sister was in danger. He once even rushed to help his friend who was ganged up by Hwang Dong Suk and his men.

20. He Successfully Resurrected Two 'Dead' People

Jin-Woo does have Shadow Extraction, which allows him to revive dead creatures, including humans, into shadows. However, Jin-Woo had also revived two people who were technically in an 'Eternal Slumber'. Both of them were in a comatose state. However, Jin-Woo used 'The Holy Water of Life' to revive his mother, who’s ‘dead’ for 4 years. He did the same to the father of Yoo Hin Ho, Yoo Mung Han, who also suffered the same disease.
