Turning Red is a new animated film by Academy Award-winning director and Pixar animator Domee Shi. Premiering on March 11, 2022, it is the first feature-length film to be operated by the Disney animation studio where the director is a woman.

Turning Red tells the story of 13 year old Meilin “Mei” Lee, a girl of Chinese descent living in Canada. When going through puberty, Mei often turns into a big red panda when she is overcome by overwhelming emotions. Curious about Turning Red? Here are 6 facts that you may not know from the movie about the magical red panda girl.

1. This Film was Made as a Follow-up to Domee Shi's Oscar-winning Animated Film

Turning Red is the follow-up to the animated short film by director Domee Shi titled Bao in 2018. Bao is a seven-minute film about a Chinese-Canadian family who find a new purpose when their traditional Chinese bun or steamed buns turn into living things.

The success of Bao made Shi take home an Oscar at the 2019 Academy Award in the best animated short film category.

2. The Creators of This Film got Their Inspiration from Their Own Life Experiences

While developing the concept for Turning Red, Shi and her production team made observations by tracing through memories in their lives.

Like Mei, I am also an only child,” said Shi. “I have always been very close to my parents, especially my mother. We did everything together,” Shi continued.

"Everyone has to make observations within their 13-year-old mind to capture the style Domee Shi wants for the May story," said producer Lindsey Collins.

The film explores the complex dynamics often seen in the relationship between a mother and daughter, and the changes during puberty. The storyline is also very reflective of the rebellion of a newly pubescent child against old-fashioned parents.

At the beginning of the film, Mei really loves her relationship with her mother. Yet she is pulled in a new direction, as are relationships with everyone her age. This is a time of great life change,” said Shi.

3. Turning into a Red Panda is a Metaphor for Puberty

In Turning Red, when Mei's emotions have taken over her, she turns into a giant red panda. This is a symbol of the transitional moment in adolescence or puberty.

The decision behind using the red panda to represent this growing pain reflects the Asian culture of director Domee Shi. This red panda mammal comes from China and the Eastern Himalayas. "Red Panda also represents the scary, unpleasant, awkward, and horrific changes we go through at puberty," said Shi.

4. The Film Combines Western and Eastern Animation Style

The 3D animation in Turning Red still carries the hallmark of Pixar films, but is given a unique mix. Domee Shi takes inspiration from Japanese anime, which she has loved since childhood.

I love how fast and loose Japanese anime characters are when playing with emotion. Their expressions can change in an instant," Shi said.

5. Shows the Power of Girls' Friendship

The friendship of Mei and her friends who give strength in Turning Red is reflected by the circle that is owned by Domee Shi.

"It's very important to create a positive women's squad," Shi said in an exclusive interview with Tatler in February 2022. “This draws directly from my own experience growing up in Toronto with the diversity I saw in my group of friends.

6. Introducing Pixar's First Original Boyband Voiced by Billie Eilish and Finneas

Turning Red features the debut of 4*Town, the five-member boy band created for the film. Singers-songwriters Billie Eilish and Finneas, who voice the boy band members', were also commissioned by Pixar to compose three original songs for the boy band.

"We needed something that Mei became obsessed with that her mother wouldn't approve of," said Shi. "Boyband is also the first step in entering the world of boys for most girls at that age of puberty," added the film's director.
