Not only in anime and manga, but in recent years hackers have gained the spotlight in Hollywood because they appear in almost every robbery-themed film, even these films about hackers are also shown on Netflix. It is not easy to describe the hacking scene that occurs in the film. Most of the scenes must have an actor or actress just being shown typing something in a command prompt tab or any software UI to show a hack that has nothing to do with a hack happening in the real world.

Very few hacker movies show the true picture of hacking properly. Let's take a look at the list of the 10 best hacker movies of all time!

1. Black Hat (2015)

In addition to Chris Hemsworth's popular role as the legendary god Thor, he stars as Nicholas Hathaway, a convicted computer hacker at Blackhat. This Hacker movie begins with a digital attack on the Chicago Mercantile Trade Exchange. This attack prompted the involvement of the FBI which led to a hacker who was serving his sentence, namely Hathaway who was brought to the FBI team to stop the attack.

Throughout this hacker film, Hathaway leads a storyline that represents the rise of a fallen hero. Possessing the necessary skills, Hathaway may be the only person capable enough to stop the dangerous motives behind this cyber attack.

2. Tron (1982)

Tron takes the classic tale of a hacker battling a large, evil corporation to its peak. The story tells of a talented computer engineer, whose work has been stolen by company executives.

To stop all this, the protagonist tries to hack into his system to uncover the evidence for this theory but is instead transported to a digital world where he has to fight against the story's antagonists, who only exist in digital form. This interesting story deserves to be watched in the original film version or with its remake version entitled Tron Legacy released in 2010.

3. Takedown (2000)

While it might be one of the hacker movies on this list that many people must have just heard of, Takedown is full of controversy, alleged lies, and even lawsuits after the film's release. The story tells of one of the most famous hackers from the hacker community, namely Kevin Mitnick, and his arrest as well.

With that in mind, the details of this story are more of a Hollywood fantasy tale than a fictional tale of Mitnick's arrest. Reviews for this particular hacking film have been mixed, with many calling it a poor portrayal of the hack and others referring to interesting scenes throughout the film.

Takedown is not only a controversial hacker film that deserves to be included in this article, but also an interesting story about one of the most famous hackers of all time.

4. The Italian Job (2003)

Although hacking is only a small part of The Italian Job, this film presents one of the first accurate depictions of hacking in 21st century, of how hacking works.

*spoiler alert*: In this film, one of the main characters, Lyle, breaks through the city's traffic control system. Through this hack, he was able to control all aspects of traffic and clear paths to route the escaping cars in the film's famous heist scene.

5. WarGames (1983)

WarGames is the oldest film in this list of the best hacker films. Released at the height of the Cold War raging in the real world, WarGames tells the story of a high school student who accidentally breaks into the United States Air Force's missile launch system. After that, the main character of this story is plunged into a world full of problems, from the FBI agent who arrested him to being suspected of being a Russian double agent trying to sabotage the United States.

The film offers the perfect mix of hacking, especially at the start of the film, while balancing it with a compelling overarching narrative. If you haven't watched WarGames, the hacker movie is worth watching even though it's almost 40 years old.

6. The Fifth Estate (2013)

This semi-fiction thriller tells the story of how Julian Assange and Daniel Domscheit-Berg collaborated to build one of the most powerful digital watchdog organizations in the world, WikiLeaks.

Most WikiLeaks organizations focus on releasing stolen information through anonymous sources, successful hacking attacks, or untrusted users with too much access and willingness to share information with the world.

This hacker film highlights most of the post-hacking process that actually takes place in the real world, but the storyline has done a good job of conveying what the everyday life of the people who work with hackers are like. Although WikiLeaks has remained mired in controversy throughout its existence, many agree that WikiLeaks has provided the world with a powerful counter-narrative against the political elite by releasing classified documents.

7. CitizenFour (2014)

This documentary tells the infamous story of Edward Snowden and his first revelation about the controversial NSA spy program to reporters.

This film provides an in-depth look at how Snowden, initially known only online as CitizenFour, contacted reporters to reveal the shocking discovery of the US government's mass surveillance system.

Prior to the disclosure, Snowden worked as an infrastructure analyst for the National Threat Operations Center where he saw firsthand the alarming amount of data collection being carried out by the US Government. Through these privacy-invading revelations about government outreach, Snowden decided to be a whistleblower and alert the masses.

While this film provides a high-level overview that is not a specific hacking scene, it covers one of the most important subjects that are highly relevant to the world of hacking and cybersecurity, namely mass surveillance. Plus, with an incredible 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it's a great movie choice for anyone interested in hacking, cybersecurity, or personal freedom.

8. Hacker (1995)

Although initially not a hit hacker film, Hacker, which was released in 1995, slowly became a cult classic. The story follows a group of high school hackers as they navigate through an accidental corporate blackmail conspiracy.

The film nailed the 1990s public sentiment towards computers and the world of hacking, portraying hackers as young nerds who can explore the outer limits of this new technology. Furthermore, the film draws on some noteworthy hacker ideologies from that period, as presented in the Hacker Manifesto released in the late 1980s.

9. The Matrix (1999)

The Matrix is listed as the most popular hacker film in this article. Although the film attracts public interest from all over the world, the film's story only depicts hacks in some of its scenes.

Much of the film focuses on "man-in-the-middle neurological attacks" made by computer lords to blackmail humans for energy. While the phishing schemes in this film are far more advanced than they are in the real world today, the film does highlight some interesting hacking scenes.

One example has to do with how people can transport themselves in and out of the Matrix using the telephone. This feels too similar to the old-school phreaking attacks that were common in the early days of internet technology.

Furthermore, The Matrix offers the audience one of the best movie versions of hackers with the presence of the character Trinity. In key scenes in the film, he does an excellent job of highlighting code-based exploits.

10. Sneakers (1992)

With the entire plot focusing on a group of computer hackers, known in the film as Sneakers but better known as penetration testers, this film is one of the best hacker films of all time. The story tells of Martin who leads a team of specialists who perform penetration testing services for a company.

Through his business, Martin finds himself in a world of trouble after completing a heist of a tool too powerful for anyone to acquire. The story follows him and his team as antagonists who constantly try to exploit people through deception or direct physical coercion.

While this film provides a high-level overview of how important cybersecurity is rather than showing a specific exploit, it stands the test of time as one of the best hacker films of all time.

Well, that's the list of the 10 best Hacker Movie facts that are suitable for you to watch if you like the theme of information technology. In your opinion, are there any other best Hacker Movies that haven't been mentioned here yet? You can share them in the comments section.
