The film follows the scandals within the royal family, with the forbidden romance and the scramble for the imperial throne.

2. Caught in Time (2020)

This Chinese movie has elements of crime, drama, and thriller. It is about a robbery case and you'll see numerous sadistic scenes throughout the film. The police are getting overwhelmed by the cruel criminals led by a ruthless psychopath. The gang leader's shrewdness in avoiding the police allows him to be steps ahead of them. The matter at hand spills over to other areas, which makes it more difficult for police officers to catch this brutal gang.

3. God of War (2017)

This Chinese movie is made by director Gordon Chan, and was a hit in the United States. This film is set in the historical Chinese war in the 15th century, and follows the two generals working together to catch Japanese raiders on the coast of China. Ming Dynasty's general Qi Jiguang and Commander Yu Dayou have to get rid of the Japanese raiders and samurai led by Kumasawa.

The raiders take over Cengang in Zhejiang, and plunder the area for the Shogun. Commander Yu manages to defeat them under General Qi, but the raiders return for revenge and attack General Qi and his troops. The raiders even managed to lay siege to two cities, namely Xinhe and Taizhou. So, how will the story pan out?

4. Shadow (2018)

One thing that makes this film stand out is the monochromatic tones of its visuals. The black-and-white visuals and various levels of gray helped make this movie so iconic. The film follows the struggles of the Pei kingdom to fight over the city of Jing, which has been taken over by the Nan kingdom.

The power shift creates polemics that build drama and tension. The film focuses on the main protagonist, Jing, who serves as the shadow for Commander Ziyu, gets caught up in political schemes while facing an identity crisis as a Shadow. As a Shadow, Jing serves as a puppet and makes appearances in public under the identity of commander Ziyu.

5. The Empty Hands (2017)

Mari Hirakawa and her father never got along, as she had many dreams but was always constrained by her father's will. After the passing of her father, Mari feels untethered and helpless. Unfortunately for her, the shadow of her father's restraint is far from ending. She receives a written request in her father's will. Her father bequeathed less than half the value of the luxurious apartment her family owns. Instead, her father bequeathed 51% of the apartment rights to his devout Karate student, Chan Keung. How will Mari face the reality she finds herself in? How will she cope with such a difficult request for her?

6. Dragon Blade (2015)

It's another colossal Chinese movie based on a historical event, and it features a multinational cast. The film tells the story of the arrival of the corrupt Roman leader, Tiberius, with his giant army, trying to control the Silk Road. The Silk Road was an ancient international trade route that connected China with the East and West.

General Huo An joins a group of trained warriors and works with the elite Legion of the Roman army led by General Lucius to protect the land and his new friends. They work alongside each other in an effort to protect the land. With the help of thirty-six countries of different ethnicities, they fight against Tiberius in an epic battle.

7. Sacrifice (2010)

This Chinese film will show you what sacrifice and revenge really are. Set in the Chinese Empire in 583 BC, the story begins with a married couple who fall victim to greed. The Zhao family is the most influential family in the entire empire, which is why Tu Angu envies them. With his deceit, Tu Angu accuses the Zhao family of massacring his entire family.

But apparently, the pregnant wife manages to escape. The wife then gets assisted by Cheng Ying to give birth to a baby named Zhao Wu, who eventually grows up to avenge his family. However, he ultimately dies at the hands of Tu Angu's subordinates, it turns out that Cheng Ying has already planned and orchestrated his revenge to make Zhao Wu close to his target. Will Zhao Wu be able to avenge his parents?

8. The Battle at Lake Changjin (2021)

This Chinese movie is said to be the movie with the most expensive production cost in China. The Battle at Lake Changjin tells the story of a battle that involves Chinese soldiers who assist Korea to resist an aggression from the United States. The war that occurred in 1950 took casualties of many Chinese soldiers as they weren't able to eat for three days and lacked ammunition, not to mention that the war took place during the snowy winter. However, even with a small army and only a few managed to survive, they were able to fight off the United States army and rendered them overwhelmed.

9.  The Grandmaster (2013)

This movie follows the life story of the Wing Chun Grandmaster, Ip Man, which begins in 1930 in Foshan. A martial arts competition between masters takes place in Foshan. These masters are not allowed to leave the battle arena, not even to eat or rest. Before the match begins, Ip Man arrives as a rich young man who possesses exceptional talent in martial arts. Ip Man finds himself trapped in a martial arts competition and amazes everyone with his martial skills. One day, a murder happens in the area, which prompts the martial arts masters, including Ip Man, to get involved.

10. The Eight Hundred (2020)

The Eight Hundred is also one of the Chinese movies that cost a whopping production fund. Not only did it take 10 years in its production, this film even took up 68 sets of buildings within an area of 133,333 meters. The film is based on real events, namely the 1937 Sihang Warehouse Defense in Shanghai. This film follows the battle in the Sihang Warehouse area, Shanghai, involving 800 Chinese soldiers, who are dealing with the brutal invasion of the Japanese army. This battle was quite tense as the Japanese army exceeded the Chinese army in terms of number. In this movie, you'll see how many sacrifices the Chinese soldiers have to make within four days to defend the region.

11. Three Kingdoms (2008)

Most Chinese movies have the theme of the legendary Three Kingdoms. Similar to other royal-themed movies, this film will also tell the story of the power struggle between the kingdoms of Wei, Wu and Shu. The ruler of the kingdom of Wei, Cao-Cao, possesses great power that even pressured the other two kingdoms to gain control of all of mainland China. The Shu army has a lineup of capable generals and commanders, such as Liu Bei, Zhao Zilong, Luo Ping'an, Zhuge Liang, Zhang Fei, Guan Yu, and others. Liu Bei's troops win their first victory on the battlefield. You will see the struggle of Zhao Zilong fighting for the kingdom of Shu.

This movie takes place during the war era of the Han Dynasty. Red Cliff is a Chinese movie that is entertaining to watch, especially for those of you who really like historical films. The story begins when the Prime Minister of the Han Dynasty persuades the Emperor of Han to declare a war against the two empires to unify China. But the plan doesn't come to pass as the two kingdoms form an alliance to defend themselves.

This popular Chinese movie is based on the life of a martial artist named Huo Yuanjia. The man openly challenges a foreign fighter in various events that are widely publicized. Thanks to it, the sense of nationalism of the Chinese people during the time of western imperialism and Japanese manipulation increases. Not only that, this film also stars popular actors from several countries such as Jet Li, Nakamura Shido II, Sun Li, Dong Yong and Nathan Jones.

14. Mulan: Rise of A Warrior (2009)
