Starring the star of X-Men, Michael Fassbender, this film tells the story of a bounty hunter named Silas Selleck, who's tasked with escorting a young man named Jay across Colorado. While Jay searches for Rose, the girl he fell in love with before he finds out that she and her father are criminals with big bounties on their heads. You will witness the numerous intense fight scenes between the protagonists and the bounty hunter, who's also looking for Rose and her father to earn the bounties.

6. Hell or High Water (2016) 

Set in Texas, this modern western begins when Tanner is released from prison, where he and his brother Toby plan a bank robbery. When they are about to start the robbery, a pair of Rangers come to arrest them. The two Rangers are Marcus Hamilton and Alberto, who's planning to retire. Chris Pine, who plays Toby and Jeff Bridges, who plays Marcus Hamilton, are exceptionally good in this movie, especially during the chase scene.

7. Hostiles (2017)

Directed by Scott Cooper, this movie has a strong element of drama instead of just the typical shootout scenes. Set in the 1980s, this movie follows the conflict between the whites and Native Americans. Where Captain Joseph Blocker is given the final task of escorting a dying Cheyenne chief to Montana. On his way, he meets a woman named Rosalie Quaid whose family was massacred by Comanche warriors. If you're looking for a cowboy movie with stunning cinematography, music, and amazing acting from the actors, then Hostiles is the right movie for you.

8. Django Unchained (2012)

This film is a remake of the 1960-released Django. It tells the story of Django, a slave who was rescued by the dapper dentist, King Schultz. Out of gratitude and indebtedness, Django decided to join the dentist on his journey. Since Schultz is a bounty hunter, he trains Django to shoot and helps him find his target, the Brittle brothers. Over time, Django becomes a sharpshooter as he begins to embrace his new life as a hitman and pull off his personal mission.

9. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)

This movie is very unique as it is a six-part anthology. Not only does it feature brutal fight scenes, but it also has a comedic side with Joel and Ethan Coen's signature jokes as the co-directors. This film depicts death in the wild west in different ways through different approaches with their own philosophical meaning. At the same time, Jake begins to regain his memories as the object on his hand turns into a weapon that can be used to defeat the aliens.

This movie is another Coen Brothers work that deserves a mention on this list. The second adaptation of Charles Portis' famous novel of the same title released in 1968, True Grit features well-known actors from Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and Hailee Steinfeld. The story centers on Mattie Ross, who hires Cogburn to go after Tom Chaney, the man who killed her father. On their journey, they are accompanied by the Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, who is also hunting for Chaney for killing the senator.

But since he needs money, he takes a job given by the local sheriff to escort as the bodyguard of Ben Wade, a criminal leader with his notorious gang. Because of the great bounty, Evans finally agrees and escorts Ben Wade to the train carriage of Yuma for trial. The journey is a hard one as Ben Wade's men are trying to save their boss.

14. The Proposition (2005)

This film tells the story of three brothers, Arthur, Charlie, & Mike, who are members of the Burns brothers gang. The gang has committed many criminal acts which leads to a shoot out with the local authority. The police manages to kill most of the Burns brothers gang members, and arrests Charlie and Mikey. Meanwhile, Arthur manages to escape. On the other hand, Charlie is given the opportunity for 9 days to find and kill Arthur. If he fails, Mikey will be hanged right on Christmas Day. It's certainly not going to be easy for Charlie. The drama that focuses on betrayal and brotherhood in this movie is really compelling.

15. Hidalgo (2004)

This film is based on a true story about the 3,000-mile horse race "The Ocean of Fire" across the Arabian desert, where the horse would race only for the nobles. In 1890, a wealthy Sheikh invited an American named Frank T. Hopkins to take part in the race. Hopkins himself is a cowboy and courier in the United States Cavalry unit. He decides to enter the race for his self-respect and honor. Meanwhile, the Sheikh wants to prove that Arab horses are more powerful than Hopkins's.
