Academy Award-winning actor William Hurt has died at the age of 71. Hurt is a veteran actor in the world of cinema, who has received three consecutive Oscar nominations for Best Actor for his performances in Kiss of the Spider Woman, Children of a Lesser God, and Broadcast News. He won an Oscar for his role in Kiss of the Spider Woman.
He is also known among young audiences for his performance as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films. Want to know what films the late William Hurt has acted in? Here are the 6 best films that you should watch!
1. Marvel Cinematic Universe Films
William Hurt made his MCU debut in 2008's The Incredible Hulk as General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross. The Incredible Hulk is the second film in the MCU after Iron Man, which made Hurt one of the longest-serving actors in the superhero world. That's because his last appearance is in Black Widow which was released in 2021.
Hurt reprises his role as Ross after the General retired from the military and transitioned into a new role as a minister in Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).
2. The Village
When it was released in 2004, M. Night Shyamalan's The Village was criticized by critics who found its slow pace and twist ending ridiculous. While this film is slow and goofy, The Village is also a very iconic thriller. The scary atmosphere that this film presents about the people of a village in Pennsylvania that is isolated and surrounded by monsters is very tense.
William Hurt plays one of the village elders, who conceals a deep secret about the origins of the settlement he shares with his blind daughter (Bryce Dallas Howard). James Newton Howard's Oscar nomination for sound makes this film worth watching.
3. AI: Artificial Intelligence
One of Steven Spielberg's masterpieces is the visually stunning 2001 sci-fi genre film. Haley Joel Osment stars as David, a highly sophisticated child robot assigned to comfort a grieving couple in lieu of their ailing son. When their biological child recovered, the husband and wife left David.
To be able to turn into a real boy and return to live in a human house, David is looking for the Blue Fairy. Along his journey, David meets a professor (William Hurt) who designs it according to the image of his dead son. Spielberg took over the AI: Artificial Intelligence project after the death of his friend and mentor as director, Stanley Kubrick. This film is one of the legendary films ever held by the 2 greatest directors in the history of cinema.

4. Kiss of the Spider Woman
William Hurt won Best Actor at the Oscars, BAFTAs, and Cannes for his role in the 1985 film. Set in a South American prison during the Brazilian military regime, Kiss of the Spider Woman centers on two cell-mates who are friends. They are a transgender woman (Hurt) imprisoned for molesting a boy, the other a political revolutionary (Raul Julia).
A milestone in the world of independent cinema, the film also received additional nominations for Best Picture, Best Director (Hector Babenco), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Leonard Schrader).
5. Children of a Lesser God
Children of a Lesser God features William Hurt as a dedicated speech teacher at a school for the deaf. The speech teacher fell in love with a janitor (Oscar Best Actress Winner Marlee Matlin). The film's director Randa Haines and Hurt make a bigger emotional impact on the storyline.
Coincidentally, the two stars of Children of a Lesser God fell in love during the making of the film. Since Hurt had won Best Actor at the Oscars the previous year for Kiss of the Spider Woman, maybe Hurt should dedicate the Oscar to his girlfriend in 1986's Children of a Lesser God.
6. Broadcast News
Broadcast News by James L. Brook is a rare film that manages to lift two unique things at once. In a way, this is a 1987 romantic comedy genre film that is funny and touching. The story is about a passionate news producer (Holly Hunter), who must choose between a handsome but stupid news anchor (William Hurt) and a brilliant but cynical reporter (Albert Brooks).
On the other hand, this film is an in-depth look at the ins and outs of a news station, where a captivating presentation is more important than a firm statement of facts. Hurt received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, and became his third successive achievement in the prestigious category.
Those are the 6 best films played by William Hurt, the Oscar-winning actor who also plays General Ross in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Do you think there are other films starring William Hurt that have not been discussed here? You can share them in the comment section.
