1. Donnie Darko (2001)

In this movie, actor Jake Gyllenhaal (Prince of Persia, Spider-Man) plays as the titular character Donnie Darko who accidentally meets a terrifying rabbit named Frank. Frank tells Darko that the world will end in 28 days. Since that, Donnie starts to travel through different time and space. This masterpiece by Richard Kelly might be one of the time travel movies with confusing opening, but believe us you will be shocked by the ending.

2. Interstellar (2014)

In the future, the earth is no longer inhabitable by humans, and humans starting to look at alternative planets to live. To find out the planet, a few astronauts were sent to space. Their journey turns out is not as easy as planned as trouble arises when they trapped in space and must through various unknown dimensions that humans never knew before, including time dimension. With Interstellar, the director Christopher Nolan managed to combine time travel with space genre so fascinating.

3. The Terminator (1984)

If we’re talking about time travel, one of the most influential is The Terminator by James Cameron. In the Terminator, where played astoundingly by actor Arnold Schwarzenegger as the titular character, was sent from 2029 to the past to kill a woman whose son will lead the human resistance force against the machines. Due to the movie’s popularity, the “I’ll be back” from the Termination himself has become a pop culture.

4. Back to the Future (1985)

Aside from The Terminator, we cannot forget the Back to the Future movie series as one of the most influential movies in the time travel genre. In the first movie, Marty McFly (played by Michael J. Fox) attempts to go back to the past to disturb the meeting of his (soon-to-be) parents. Even though the premise is a little weird, but Back to the Future is very entertaining and successfully manage to spawn sequels.

5. Planet of the Apes (1968)

The Planet of the Apes which released in 1968 probably the first, modern time travel movie ever made. This movie tells about a group of astronauts who travel through time and landed on earth 2000 years in the future. In the future, the earth’s condition is very different because the primates have dominated the earth and make humans as a downtrodden race. With its success, the movie managed to spawn 5 sequels.

6. Doctor Strange (2016)

Comes in MCU world, Doctor Strange maybe one of the most popular time travel movies in this list. Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is an arrogant surgeon who has to lose his hands’ motoric movement due to a car crash. To return it to normal, Dr. Strange studies under a wizard named Ancient One, unbeknownst to him, Dr. Strange instead having the ability to control time due to Time Stone he wields that becomes one of the most sought after stones in the MCU.

7. Twelve Monkeys (1995)

Twelve Monkeys tells about a criminal in 2035 named James Cole who sent into the past to find the source of the deadly virus that will endanger the world in the future. When he arrives in the past, James must enter an asylum because nobody believes that he came from the future. This movie is recommended because it stars many famous names and interesting storyline.

8. Edge of  Tomorrow (2014)

Cage, who played by Tom Cruise, is a soldier who tasked to defend the earth from alien attacks. During his mission, Cage receives the power to travel back to the past every time he dies in a mission. Packed with his newfound power, Cage attempts to save the world from the aliens. Aside from the entertaining storyline, this time travel movie based on a manga also packed with thrilling action sequences.

9. Looper (2012)

In 2077, the time travel machine has been found but secured by the mafia to kill their rivals. The mafia sends their enemies back to 2047. At that year, a killer has awaited for them named Looper. Joe (played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt), is one of the respected Looper. In one mission, Joe is tasked to kill someone from the past but surprisingly, the target this time is himself from the future.

10. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006)

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time maybe the only anime that included in this list but still the movie is one of the best time travel movies ever made. This movie tells about a girl named Makoto who finds out a device that can make her travel to the past. Makoto uses that newfound device to repair her past mistake, but her actions cause unexpected effects to others. The storyline is pretty unexpected and makes your eyes shed tears suddenly.
