While MOBA games such as League of Legends have survived to this day, the old rival of League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth, has been able to survive in the market for more than a decade. But unfortunately, Heroes of Newerth has officially closed. Now the legendary MOBA games that still exist are League of Legends and DOTA 2.
Despite developer HOM late last year that the game would close on June 20th 2022, no official reason was given why that would be the case. Despite HON being a successful game competing with DOTA 2 and League of Legends in 2015, things seem to have changed some time ago.
Even the game's official closing announcement via Reddit received more than a few dozen upvotes and comments, indicating that the current player base alone isn't enough to support a project of such magnitude. At this point, the server appears to be completely inaccessible, and there isn't any offline functionality in the game that makes it completely dead.
It is interesting to note that HON was originally a paid game. This game is priced at US$30 until the game finally switches to the F2P model with micro transactions. This allows the studio to secure a more substantial community that can be gathered.
Of course HON lasts longer than many other MOBAs. For example Epic Games' Paragon sank early, although they found another advantage with Fortnite. Whatever the case, HON managed to stay relatively relevant for a very long time, especially as an F2P game.
What do you think? Has anyone played HON before? This game is officially inaccessible now.
