JRPG itself is an abbreviation of Japanese Role Playing Game, where the RPG game has adopted pop-culture native to Japan. Final Fantasy VII is one of the best JRPG games that was released on PS1 and re-released for PS4 and PS5. But besides Final Fantasy VII, there are many JRPG games that have graced PS2. What are these games? Just take a look at the list of the best PS2 JRPG games below!

1. Shadow Hearts Series

Have you ever heard of the JRPG Shadow Hearts? Shadow Hearts apparently disappeared along with the studio that made it, Nautilus in 2007. This RPG game is famous for its Judgment Ring mechanic which requires precision to be able to do all the actions. Not only that, the main character in this game has a unique ability that can turn into a monster by fusion to fight enemies. Character and comedy become one of the main points in Shadow Hearts. Even though the theme is quite dark, the silly comedy actually makes Shadow Hearts fun.

2. Jade Cocoon 2

Jade Cocoon 2 is a JRPG game that allows gamers to collect monsters on PS2. This game revolves around finding monster eggs and combining them to get even more powerful monsters. The battles in this game are quite unique. The battle revolves around the 4 elements and the abilities of the monsters are determined by their placement on the battlefield. Monsters will only attack if placed in an area with the same element. This feature makes Jade Cocoon 2 more strategic than the first game.

3. Radiata Stories

Then there is Radiata Stories which is also one of the best JRPG games that was also released on PS2. This game made by tri-Ace comes with an action RPG genre and has a pretty strange story. This game tells the story of Jak, the main character in this game who is in the middle of a war between humans and non-humans. There are 176 characters that can be recruited in Radiata Stories. Each of these characters also has a unique story. Although the gameplay is fairly simple, the art, music and characters are the main attraction in Radiata Stories.

4. Rogue Galaxy

Next is Rogue Galaxy, a JRPG game that has a variety of features that really make the game not boring. In addition to its unique battles with various boss battles, Rogue Galaxy also adapts the features of weapons that can evolve like in Dark Cloud. Interestingly, Level-5 also adds a crafting feature with really challenging puzzle elements. Comedy elements are also very thick in this game. Moreover, it is also combined with the story with the theme of space pirates and the variety of characters you meet. That was one of the reasons why Rogue Galaxy was so memorable for fans of JRPG games in the PS2 era.

5. Suikoden 3

Suikoden fans on PS1 will not pass up Suikoden 3 when it was released on PS2. Unlike the two previous games, Suikoden 3 can be played through three characters with their own perspectives. This game also allows players to gather 108 characters without having to be chased by time and only depending on the decisions made.

6. Front Mission 4 and 5

Front Mission 4 and Front Mission 5: Scars of the War are two Front Mission series released for PS2. The story still revolved around mecha or robots. The gameplay of these two games also borrows some of the mechanics and features from Front Mission 2. However, due to changes in graphics, these two games are loved by mecha fans.

7. Grandia 2 and 3

Furthermore, there are Grandia 2 and 3 which are the best JRPG games on the PS2 console. Both series present stories that must be followed by JRPG fans. The gameplay is also similar to the Final Fantasy series which limits the movement of the player's character during battle. For those of you who are curious, Grandia 2 was also re-released for Nintendo Switch in August 2019.

8. Dark Cloud Series

Dark Cloud is a JRPG game developed by Level-5 and released for PS2 at that time. Coming with the action RPG genre, this game has unique mechanics that make the game very memorable, namely weapons that can evolve, random dungeons, and building simulations. All of these mechanics are nicely combined by Level-5 and make the Dark Cloud game our first choice. Rumors about a third sequel to this game had appeared in 2009. Unfortunately, this rumor was immediately denied by the CEO of Level-5, Akihiro Hino, in 2017.

9. Arc The Lad: The Twilight of Spirit

Arc The Lad: The Twilight of Spirit is the fourth installment of Arc The Lad that was released for PS1. The Twilight of Spirit series is unique in its combat system which is different from the previous trilogy. Characters move in a radial area and the fight is also heavily influenced by altitude, type of terrain and also the direction of attack. The main point in the Arc The Lad: The Twilight of Spirit is the story is seen from two different points of view. First from the human side and second from the Deimos side. These two races hate each other and dwell on their attempts to destroy each other.

10. Xenosaga Series

Finally, Xenosaga series is a JRPG game that comes in three episodes for PS2. The three episodes do present a fairly long story, but they do present a good story. Even the first game ever got an adaptation in the form of manga and anime. The gameplay may not be that different from other JRPG games released on PS2. Even so, the Xenosaga series is still highly recommended for those of you who have never tried it before.
