Resident Evil, or in Japan known as Biohazard, is not only Capcom’s one of most popular game series but also one of the most popular in the world. Born in 1996 as a PS1 game, the title immediately became a hit in the game industry and thrives on to this day; spawned 26 different game titles, 10 feature films, and dozens of novels, comics, and other entertainment media.
However, its long history does not mean that the Resident Evil series is always filled with groundbreaking titles that fans enjoy. Well, based on the review score aggregation site Metacritic, these are the 10 worst Resident Evil game titles of all time!
10. Resident Evil Outbreak
- Platform: PS2 (2003)
- Metacritic Score: 71/100
Together with Monster Hunter and Auto Modellista, Resident Evil Outbreak was Capcom's first attempt to test the online capabilities of a console, especially PS2. Although the idea was pretty novel at the time, critics found the characters and the story that took place in Raccoon City feel uncreative and the absence of voice chat made communication between players difficult.
9. Resident Evil: Deadly Silence
- Platform: NDS (2006)
- Metacritic Score: 71/100
NDS exclusive Resident Evil 1 remake. Released in celebration of the horror game franchise's 10th anniversary, Deadly Silence adds features for touchscreen and dual screens, additional gameplay from Resident Evil 3 and 4, and a new Rebirth mode that can be played by up to two DS users. Unfortunately many players find the graphics and controls feel outdated and not scary anymore.
8. Resident Evil 6
- Platform: Xbox 360, PS3 (2012); PC (2013); PS4, Xbox One (2016); Switch (2019)
- Metacritic Score: 67/100
Although Capcom managed to sell 10 million copies and Resident Evil 6 became the most successful title released by the Osaka-based company at the time, the messy development process made the game a sizable failure. Capcom felt the game failed to hit sales targets while critics complained that the gameplay between the four story modes was inconsistent and didn't feel like a horror game at all. This writer personally feels that Capcom should have used Resident Evil 6's gameplay for other game series and it most likely would have been better received by gamers.
7. Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D
- Platform: 3DS (2011)
- Metacritic Score: 65/100
A title exclusive to the 3DS that compiles the Mercenaries modes from Resident Evil 4 and 5 into one game, though somehow leaves out Leon S. Kennedy. The Mercenaries 3D is considered quite okay if you are a big fan of the minigame but most people feel the game is too short and does not provide additional value for those who have finished Resident Evil 4 and 5.
6. Resident Evil: Dead Aim
- Platform: PS2 (2002)
- Metacritic Score: 65/100
Dead Aim is a spin-off that combines classic Resident Evil gameplay with first-person mode like Time Crisis. While many gamers liked the story's location, which took place on a luxury cruise ship, the game was criticized for being too short and lacking content to be played over and over again.
5. Resident Evil: Resistance
- Platform: PS4, Xbox One, PC (2020)
- Metacritic Score: 64/100
An additional online PVP game for Resident Evil 3 Remake, this game was outsourced by NeoBards Entertainment from Taiwan, who previously worked on Devil May Cry HD Collection and Onimusha: Warlords Remaster. Although it can be played for free, the players feel that the gameplay is not well balanced, end up making it not interesting and easily forgettable.

4. Resident Evil Outbreak File #2
- Platform: PS2 (2005)
- Metacritic Score: 71/100
The standalone expansion pack for Resident Evil Outbreak, File #2 still features the same eight characters and online features as before. Again, the lack of voice chat is its biggest drawback, plus the release of Resident Evil 4 shortly after this made it completely forgotten from the minds of most people. Maybe instead of making Resistance, Capcom should remake Outbreak considering that nowadays online multiplayer games have become extremely common.
3. Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City
- Platform: PS3, Xbox 360, PC (2012)
- Metacritic Score: 52/100
Taking place in Raccoon City throughout Resident Evil 2 and 3, the game follows the conflict between US special forces and Umbrella mercenaries who have their own agendas in the midst of the chaos. In terms of sales, Operation Raccoon City sold well but many complained that its gameplay was just like a normal third-person shooter.
2. Resident Evil: Survivor
- Platform: PS2 (2000)
- Metacritic Score: 39/100
Considered as the worst Resident Evil horror game in history to this very date. Developed by Tose Software (Thousand Arms, World of Final Fantasy, Scarlet Nexus), this game tells the adventures of an amnesiac man named "Vincent". Using first-person gameplay like Time Crisis, the Japanese version of Survivor supports the use of light-gun peripherals, but the American/global version doesn't and ends up making the gameplay feel incredibly awkward and uncomfortable. The bad story doesn't help the game's reputation either.
1. Umbrella Corps
- Platform: PS4, PC (2016)
- Metacritic Score: 38/100
This Resident Evil spin-off was supposed to be one of Capcom's attempts to enter the realm of esports or competitive online games. But just like Resident Evil 6, despite having some interesting gameplay ideas, overall Umbrella Corps fails to quench the thirst of both shooter and horror fans.
