Imagining taking control of a giant robot aka mecha and fighting with each other is the dream of many gamers. It’s not surprising, considering that mecha games provide a different experience than ordinary shooter games. Well, to get a taste of that particular experience, here's a list of free-to-play games on Steam that you can try for free and allow you to play as or control the robots from their cockpit. 

Note: the data on the player numbers are taken from the Steam Charts of Steam Database or SteamDB, a site that (as the name implies) collects various kinds of data about Valve's digital store. 

1. Phantasy Star Online 2 New Genesis

In addition to playing as a human race and elves that is commonly found in various MMORPG titles, in this science fiction-themed MMORPG you can create robot characters by choosing the CAST race. Here we play as a member of the space organization Oracle, whose task is to find new planets to live in as well as to fight the threat of the evil alien Falspawn. There are 4,300 active players in the game as of this writing.

2. MechWarrior Online

Giant robots or mechas aren't just the domain of Japanese developers. Part of the BattleTech franchise that was born in 1984, here you and your friends compete using various types of powerful war robots known as BattleMechs. 709 people is currently playing this title in the last 24 hours.

3. Super Mecha Champions

If you're looking for a free mecha-themed battle royale game, there's Super Mecha Champions. As you might expect from the title (and similar to Titanfall) in the middle of a match you can summon giant robots to change the course of the battle. There are 867 active players here.

4. AirMech Strike

Meanwhile, for MOBA fans, you can try AirMech Strike. Here you control a robot that can transform into a fighter plane and lead a number of other combat vehicles to combat. Unfortunately, the player base regret that the multiplayer population is now very small (there were only 16 people at the time this article was written) and the single-player features were moved to the paid title AirMech Wasteland.

5. CosmicBreak Universal

The mecha-themed online fighting game, which was first released in 2008, has been re-launched on Steam. Featuring PVP matches up to 30v30, in this title you can control 50 different types of robots complete with 300 parts for you to match and modify. There are only 80 people currently active in this game.

6. War Robots

War Robots features 45 different types of giant fighting robots, 50 different weapons such as machine guns, rocket launchers, and plasma guns in exciting 6v6 PVP matches. A total of 1,108 people were playing it at the time this article was written.

7. Robocraft

As the title suggests, here you don't just modify existing robots with various parts and weapons. Instead, you have to create your own war vehicle with more than 250 different customization boxes. There are 258 active players at the moment.

8. Combots

PVP game with procedurally created battle arenas, the game presents a different experience every time you play it. You can use four different types of robots and 17 loadouts to play the three available game modes. Around 16 players are currently active in this game at the time of writing.
