Squid Game is currently one of the most popular series on Netflix. This series follows a group of people with financial issues who are being quarantined, participating in a mysterious survival competition with their lives at stake.
Interestingly, the participants have to compete in a series of traditional children’s games with Squid Game (Korean traditional children’s game) as the final. Well, if this series was made into an Indonesian adaptation, what kind of traditional games would it feature? Let’s take a look.
1. Stilts
A traditional Indonesian children’s game that could be part of Squid Game if the series took place in Indonesia is Egrang (stilts). It’s a popular traditional game in West Java. This game is also played during Indonesia’s Independence Day every August 17.
To play Egrang, you need a pair of bamboo stilts. You’ll need a good balance and coordination to keep moving.
2. Gobak Sodor
Next up, we have Gobak Sodor. This traditional game has different names in each region in Indonesia (Gobak Sodor, Hadang, or Galasin), yet they all share the same rules and gameplay.
This game is usually played on a badminton court with the lines as the reference, or a 9x4m rectangular field split into 6 parts.
The goal of this game is for the guards to work together to keep the opposing team under control.
3. Bentengan
Bentengan is a traditional game that is commonly played at schools. Bentengan is a group game that requires agility, speed, as well as strategy.
The game requires two “forts” (which derives from the word “benteng”) of two trees or poles on a field. Each group consists of 4-8 players. The rule is simple: keep your forts from being touched by the opposing team.
Each player has a task, some have to guard the forts, the other has to capture the opponents, with the other ones have to touch/take over the opponents’ forts.

4. Taplak Gunung
Do you still remember the traditional game engkleng, engklek, or taplak gunung (hopscotch)? This traditional game, which doesn’t require any cost to play, is rarely played by children nowadays, especially in big cities.
It’s easy to play this game, the players have to draw several squares on the ground, with a semicircle at the top. The squares form the letter T, in the order of 3 vertical squares, 3 horizontal squares, 1 vertical square, and 2 horizontal squares.
Each player has to jump into the squares using 1 leg and must not go over or out of the box line.
5. Kite Fighting
At number five, we have kite fighting, a competition where the players are trying to cut down the others’ line. Kites’ spars are made from thin lightweight bamboo, with thin paper or plastic as the skin. The shape of the kite determines how stable it is in the air.
This traditional game can be so rewarding if you’re able to cut down the other players’ line. The loser will usually end up chasing their kites.
6. Petak Umpet
Last but not least, we have Petak Umpet (hide and seek). It’s a simple game to play, you just need to gather some players, and make some rules for those who will be hiding; usually, they can only hide within a certain area. After that, choose one player as the seeker, while the others have to hide.
