TOHO announced on Wednesday, December 20th 2023 that Godzilla Minus One, the latest movie in TOHO's Godzilla franchise directed by Takashi Yamazaki, will release a new black-and-white version under the title Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color (Godzilla -1.0/C) on 12th January 2024 in Japan. TOHO has also released a teaser trailer for this version.

Godzilla Minus One premiered in Japan on November 3rd 2023 ("Godzilla Day"), commemorating the anniversary of the release of the first Godzilla movie on November 3rd 1954. The movie was also screened at the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) as the event's closing movie on November 1st 2023 .

In its first three days at the Japanese box office, Godzilla Minus One managed to sell 648,600 tickets worth 1,041,193,460 yen (around Rp. 104 billion). This number surpassed the ticket sales and earnings of Shin Godzilla, the previous Japanese live action Godzilla movie directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, in its first three days of 2016, with ticket sales growth of 14.7% and revenue growth of 22.8%.

In total, this movie sold 2.87 million tickets with cumulative revenues of around 4,425,512,980 yen (around IDR 442 billion).

Ryunosuke Kamiki (live action Rurouni Kenshin) plays the protagonist named Koichi Shikishima, while Minami Hamabe (Shin Masked Rider) plays the female lead named Noriko Oishi. Other cast members include Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Andō, and Kuranosuke Sasaki.

Godzilla Minus One released in United States cinemas on December 1st 2023 and has been successful since its first three days, which placed it in third place at the United States box office on the weekend of its release.

This achievement makes Godzilla Minus One the foreign movie with the highest weekend release in the United States this year, surpassing the weekend release of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Swordsmith Village Arc in March 2023.

Godzilla Minus One is also the live action movie made in Japan with the highest grossing in North America. Apart from that, the Critics Choice Award has also nominated this movie in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

Takashi Yamazaki, as director, screenwriter and person in charge of visual effects, succeeded in bringing this film to the peak of success. Although famous as the director of several live action movies such as Always: Sunset on Third Street, Returner, and Parasyte, Yamazaki has also directed CG anime movies such as Stand By Me Doraemon.
