The latest Korean film Good News (2025) has captured audiences’ attention with its unique blend of disaster and dark comedy. Directed by Byun Sung-hyun and starring Sul Kyung-gu, Hong Kyung, and Ryoo Seung-bum, the movie tells a tense story about a secret mission to land a hijacked plane.

The crisis begins when a Japanese Red Army Faction group hijacks a plane, attempting to redirect it to North Korea as part of a revolutionary act. However, due to technical limitations, the Japanese pilot lands elsewhere, while the South Korean government sees a political opportunity amid the chaos.

KCIA Director Park Sang-hyeon then recruits Nobody, a mysterious “fixer,” to lead the rescue operation. Working alongside Seo Go-myung, he devises an elaborate ruse—transforming Gimpo Airport into a fake version of Pyongyang using props from a movie set.

The plan initially works, but the hijackers eventually realize they’ve been deceived. As the situation grows tense and diplomatic negotiations collapse, Japan’s Minister of Transport, Shinichi Ishida, makes a selfless decision to offer himself as a hostage in exchange for the passengers’ safety.

His sacrifice, combined with Nobody and Seo’s clever tactics, leads to the rescue of more than a hundred people without a single casualty.

Despite his heroism, Seo Go-myung receives no recognition. From the beginning, his dream was to become a national hero, following in the footsteps of his father, a forgotten war veteran. Yet, the South Korean government erases his involvement from official records to maintain diplomatic balance with the United States and the Soviet Union. His only token of appreciation is a wristwatch from Nobody—a personal acknowledgment and a reminder that true heroes are often forgotten by history.

As for Nobody, his identity remains shrouded in mystery. He receives a new ID card from the KCIA under the name Choi Go-myung, though the film never confirms whether it’s his real name.

Good News closes on an ironic twist: the hijackers’ guns were fake, and they never intended to kill anyone. Through this ambiguous and bittersweet ending, the film exposes the absurdity of power, the cost of unrecognized sacrifice, and the idea that true greatness often goes unnoticed in the eyes of history.
