The Great Titan War was a period of civil war in the Eldian Empire. The Eldian 145th King, Karl Fritz, caused a conflict that involved the holders of the Nine Titans’ Powers. This led the oppressed Marleyans to rise up with the help of the Tybur family, overthrowing Eldia. 

The war ended with the fall of the Eldian Empire, and the retreat of the many Eldians to Paradis Island – where they built the Walls, isolating themselves from the outside world.

The Beginning

For over hundreds of years, various houses submitted to the Fritz family were constantly engaging in conflicts with one another to gain control over the Eight Titans, with the power of the Founding Titan belonging to the Eldian Empires throughout centuries. However, when Karl Fritz inherited the Founding Titan, he decided to leave the conflict of Eldia and relocate the capital to Paradis Island to the east of the mainland.

Believing that the Eldians deserved retribution for their crimes against the world for over centuries, Karl Fritz colluded with the Tybur family, the holders of the War Hammer Titan, to bring down Eldia. The Marleyans, descendants of an ancient nation that has suffered greatly under the Eldian Empire’s oppression, snatched the opportunity to turn the tide of the war.

As the Eldian Empire started to run out of enemies, the eight families/holders of the power of the Titans began to turn on each other in an endless cycle of conspiracy and betrayal. In the midst of this conflict, the Marleyans managed to gain control over the seven out of the Nine Titans, completely dominating Eldia – dramatically gained an edge over their opponents.

The first Titan to support the Marleyan uprising was the War Hammer Titan, which was held by the Tybur family.

It’s unknown how long the Great Titan War lasted. But during the entire conflict, Marley managed to claim most of the territories that had previously belonged to the Eldian Empire.

According to Willy Tybur, Karl Fritz grew tired of the unending conflicts between the houses/holders of the Titan powers and began to feel guilt for Marley’s sufferings under the tyrannical empire. By colluding with the Tybur family, King Fritz made up a fictitious hero named Helos to present Marley as the nation that successfully cause the downfall of the Eldian Empire.

Unaware of the conspiracy involving Fritz and Tybur, the Eldians continued to eliminate each other for a long time.

In 743, Karl Fritz decided to use the Founding Titan power to put an end to the war and bring peace to Eldia. After gathering the Eldians to Paradis Island, King Fritz eventually used the power of the Founding to bring countless Colossal Titans to construct the three concentric walls around Eldia’s remaining territories; Maria, Rose, and Sheena.

To spot the Marleyans from advancing to these territories, King Fritz sent an official ultimatum saying that if they dared to disturb his people, the Colossal Titans inside the walls would be unleashed to flatten the entire earth.

Once all of the Eldians had gathered inside the Walls, the gates were sealed and King Fritz sent a message to the other members of the Fritz family across the sea in Marley – saying that he had made a vow with the Founding Titan renouncing all wars. With this vow, the Great Titan War was officially ended.

Post Great Titan War

Soon after the gates were sealed shut, Karl Fritz used the power of the Founding Titan to erase the people’s memories about the world prior to the Walls. For the next several centuries, the descendants of Eldian would continue to live believing that they’re the remaining humans on earth, with the world beyond the Walls overrun by the Titans.

The Hizuru nation was also called into question for their alliance with the Eldians and had their reputation tarnished as a result of the war, with a branch of their clans being left on the Island.

Whereas across the sea, on the mainland of the newly-founded nation of Marley, the Eldians became the pariahs under the new authority. Instead of eliminating the remaining Eldians altogether, the government of Marley opted to confine them within an internment zone, keeping them separated from the Marleyans.

The Tybur family was the only house of Eldians allowed to keep their Titan power as they helped Marley overthrow the Eldian Empire. They were also granted a nobility status as  honorary Marleyans and given the permit to live on luxurious estates.

Some members of the Fritz family had also since stayed in Marley as they were displeased with King Fritz’s decision to abandon the conflict. For the next centuries, Marleyans believe that they were the ones who had conquered the Eldians with their powers.

Over the next 80 years, some Eldians would gather and form a resistance, with the main goal of toppling Marley and restoring the Eldian Empire.
