Garen is a Tank Champion that gamers use in the Baron lane. Even though he’s a Tank, Garen’s damage output is not to be overlooked. Because of this very reason, many gamers choose a more aggressive build for Garen by using a certain damage item such as Trinity Force. Now, to get a better grasp of this Champion, take a look at the following guide by Dunia Games.

1. Item Build

[Trinity Force]

As we’ve mentioned above, many gamers equip Garen with Trinity Force. It’s mainly for Sheen’s Passive, which grants Garen a 100% Attack Damage bonus (200% when upgraded to Trinity Force) after using an ability -- which suits his Decisive Strike (1) so well.

Aside from that, Trinity Force also increases his Movement Speed.

[Mercury Treads]

For his boots, you can purchase Mercury Treads for Garen. Since Garen doesn’t have any escape tools (except for the Movement Speed he gains from Decisive Strike (1)), he’s susceptible to stuns. And, Mercury Treads has a Passive that reduces the duration of enemies’ Crowd Control.

[Black Cleaver]

Black Cleaver will make Garen even more aggressive, whilst also providing him with additional HP, making it harder for enemies to finish him off. With this item, Garen will get extra 30 Attack Damage, 20% Cooldown Reduction, and 350 HP.

What makes Garen more effective with this item is the Passive that the Black Cleaver has, which reduces your target’s armor after landing a hit by 4% for 6 seconds -- stacking 6 times for 24% reduction.

[Death’s Dance]

For his fourth item, you may want to get Death’s Dance to give him sustain in team fights. Death’s Dance will grant Garen 10% lifesteal with a bleed effect. With the bleed effect of the 30% damage taken for over 3 seconds, enemies will have to think twice before dealing with you.

Death's Dance also offers 300% HP, 35 Attack Damage, and 10% Cooldown Reduction -- making him even more deadly although it doesn’t only give you Attack Damage.

[Dead Man's Plate]

Be aware that not every item in this build offers Attack Damage. Otherwise, he will be easily get killed, even before a team fight ensues. Now, to prevent any premature end in team fights, you can get the Dead Man's Plate for its 50 armor and 300 HP. On top of that, this item has a Passive, Momentum, which grants him extra 50 Movement Speed -- once you have reached 100 stacks of Momentum.

[Spirit Visage]

Now, to withstand the enemy Mage, Spirit Visage is the best item for you. It increases Garen’s HP regen by 100% -- which works wonderfully with his Passive, Perseverance, which allows him to regenerate his HP when he doesn’t receive any damage.

[Upgrade Mercury Treads: Teleport Enchant]

Since you will be playing in the Baron lane, it will be harder for you to help your allies securing a Dragon buff. Therefore, you can pick Teleport Enchant to arrive early.

While the cooldown of Teleport Enchant is quite long, at least it comes in handy when you need to help your allies when you are doing a split push.

2. Rune

[Conqueror]

As a Fighter-Tank, Garen needs to have huge Damage to finish off his targets quickly. Therefore, you may want to pick Conqueror as his Rune. Its Passive grants him 2-6 bonus Damage (based on level), stacking up to 5 times --  for a maximum of 10 - 30 bonus attack damage (based on level).

[Triumph]

For Domination, you can pick Triumph to restore 10% missing HP for each Champion takedown. It also offers a 3% increased Damage to enemies below 35% HP.

[Regeneration]

Next, you can also use Regeneration to give Garen some sustain. The Passive regenerates 2% of Garen’s missing HP or mana every 3 seconds (based on whichever percentage is lower).

[Hunter - Genius]

Hunter - Genius as his Inspiration Rune will provide Garen with a 2.5% bonus cooldown reduction. Also, unique takedowns will grant him a 1.5% bonus cooldown reduction. This Rune synergizes greatly with Garen’s skill set, especially his Decisive Strike (1).

3. Spells

[Flash]

Flash is a Spell for the people. Almost every Champion uses this Spell to chase down enemies or escaping from them. However, this cooldown for Spell is quite long, 150s.

[Ignite]

Ignite greatly benefits Garen for duels. You can use Ignite when the enemy HP is critically low, as it will burn your target with 60-410 true damage (based on level) for 5s -- finishing off your target when they try to escape the team fight.

4. Combo

Since Garen is a beginner-friendly Champion, his combo is rather simple. The mechanics are also far from complex, unlike Camille nor Zed. So, here’s the combo:

Courage (2) - Decisive Strike (1) - Basic Attack - Judgment (3)

5. Gameplay

  1. Dish out constant damage on your targets using the combo: Courage (2) - Decisive Strike (1) - Basic Attack - Judgment (3);
  1. If your health is running low, take a step back. Take advantage of Garen’s Passive, Perseverance, to regenerate some health;
  2. Don’t use Demacian Justice (Ultimate) when the enemy still has a lot of HP. Use it when the enemy is below 20-30% HP for the bonus damage of missing health;
