Prize pool of Rp 500 Billions, Viewership Record, Other Interesting Facts From The International 2019
In addition to the world record as an esport tournament with the largest number of prizes, TI 2019 has various other improvements.
Esports | 02 September
Biggest Dota 2 tournament, The International ended last month. With a total prize pool of US$ 34 million, or close to Rp 500 billion, this tournament breaks a world record as esports tournament with the biggest prize pool.
For the first time in the history of the tournament, a team can win for two straight years. This happens after OG beat Liquid in the final and be the champion for the second time.
Other than that record, TI 2019 offers some interesting statistics, especially for viewership. According to Echarts, TI 2019 viewership saw a significant increase.
The viewership is split into three aspects, the most spectator in a game, the average number of viewers per game, and total hours spend to watch TI. In TI 2019, these three aspects have significantly increased compared to previous TI.
Echarts recorded1,96 millions of people all over the world watch the game of OG versus Liquid in the finals, making it the most spectated game. This number is 63% higher compared to TI 2018.
There's also an increase in average viewers per game in TI 2019. TI 2019 has an average viewer of 727.000 people. It's close to 200.000 more people on average compared to TI 2018.
In the same report, it is recorded that 88 million hours are spent watching the tournament. It's 23 million hours or 34% higher than the previous year.
In the final match itself, the number of viewers who spoke English increased to 376.000 people. One of the reasons that caused this was the broadcasting time which helped many fans of OG that came from western Europe.
Other than English, Russian speaking viewers also increased by 195.000. A much higher number might be possible if team Natus Vincere (Na'Vi) from Ukraine and team Virtus Pro (VP) from Russia was not eliminated on the first day of the playoff.
It seems like not many Asians (China excluded) are not too interested in watching this tournament.
Data from the above are taken from Twitch, Steam TV, Youtube, DOTATV, and other platforms. it's recorded that Twitch and Steam TV is the biggest contributor for viewership with a total of more than 80% people watching TI 2019.
Just like last year, Twitch is the leading platform used to watch TI. But last year Twitch was able to contribute 71% from total viewership and this year Twitch is "only" able to lead with 52% from total viewership.
This may have been caused by the success of Steam TV. Although only a year old, the streaming platform from Steam has several advantages such as chat room and the rewind feature that's not present on Twitch.
Other than Twitch and Steam TV, Youtube contributes 15% of total viewership. Does this mark the end of Twitch domination in streaming games?
