The studio behind the co-op game It Takes Two, Hazelight Studios, will release a new game titled Split Fiction on March 6, 2025. Like most of Hazelight's previous games, this game can only be played in co-op format, either online or offline in couch co-op mode.
Similar to It Takes Two, Split Fiction will take both players into a variety of different worlds within its story. The concept of these worlds is tied to the game's premise about Mio and Zoe, two aspiring writers . They become involved in an experiment conducted by a tech company that can turn the worlds in their imaginations into reality through advanced simulation technology. However, an accident during the experiment traps them both in the same world. This creates conflict between the two, as they have different genre preferences: Mio often writes in the science fiction genre, while Zoe is more accustomed to writing fantasy. Throughout the story of Split Fiction, they must find a way to return to the real world by navigating a series of simulated worlds born from their imaginations.
The two trailers released by Hazelight on EA's YouTube channel showcase the various worlds that Mio and Zoe must explore. For example, in a science fiction world, players must ride futuristic motorcycles while jumping over obstacles. Or, in a fantasy world, both players each receive a baby dragon that eventually grows into rideable adult dragons. However, there are times when the game introduces separate gameplay features that require the two players to cooperate, such as a fantasy world that transforms Mio into a giant primate and Zoe into a tiny fairy.
Split Fiction will be released on March 6, 2025, for Windows, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. Like Hazelight's previous games, players can use the "Friend’s Pass" system, which allows one player to invite a friend to play the game together without the need to purchase a separate copy.
Based on the gameplay features showcased by Hazelight so far, it appears that Split Fiction will be an exciting experience that can be enjoyed with friends, best friends, siblings, or partners. The simple and not overly mature story premise also makes it appealing to players of all ages.
