Studio Khara announced that Hideaki Anno will be the designer and producer for the 50th anniversary celebration project of the epic space anime franchise, Space Battleship Yamato, by Yoshinobu Nishizaki and Leiji Matsumoto. The Space Battleship Yamato project will include several book publications and a special screening event on October 6th 2024, which will mark 50 years since the anime's first episode aired in 1974. In addition, exhibitions will also be organized across Japan to celebrate this historic moment.
Some of the book publications planned for this project include: an artbook created by renowned manga creator Michio Murakawa, a book of designs by renowned mechanical designer Junichiro Tamamori, a special 50th anniversary edition titled Space Battleship Yamato 1974 Complete Works, and manga publications. Studio Khara will be responsible for the publication of the latter two projects.
Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno has often cited the Space Battleship Yamato series as a major inspiration for his interest in anime, and even designed the opening sequence for the Star Blazers 2199 series. Anno stated in his comments about the project that he has been a loyal fan of the franchise for 49 years, since he was in middle school.
He added that he can't imagine how his life would be without the franchise, given how important a role it played in shaping his interest and career in anime. He also recalled how he missed the first episode when it first aired, but then eagerly watched the later episodes, even sacrificing playtime to watch it.
The Space Battleship Yamato anime follows the journey of the battleship Yamato from World War II after being revived as a starship to fight an alien threat to Earth. The first television series premiered in October 1974.
Later, the first animated film was released in 1977 and was a huge success, grossing 2.1 billion yen at the box office. The anime franchise even earned the highest live television rating of 50% in 1978.
The next project in the Space Battleship Yamato remake series, Yamato yo Towa ni: Rebel 3199 (Be Forever Yamato: Rebel 3199), will premiere as seven movies, with the first movie titled Kuro no Shinryaku (Dark Invasion) to be released on July 19th 2024.
Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199 is a remake of the original 1974 series Space Battleship Yamato created by Leiji Matsumoto and Yoshinobu Nishizaki. The series first aired in Japan as a series of seven films that were shown in theaters from 2012 to 2013, before later airing on Japanese television in April 2013.
To complete the series, the anime movie Uchu Senkan Yamato 2199: Hoshi-Meguru Hakobune was also released in Japan in 2014. With this 50th anniversary project, fans can anticipate the return of one of the legendary anime franchises with a new twist from Hideaki Anno.
