The Scrollbearer game that appeared at IGDX 2024 stole the attention of many visitors with its attractive graphic quality. It doesn't stop there, there are interesting facts behind the development of this game. It turns out that this game was successfully developed in a relatively short time. This roguelike game based on 2.5D pixel graphics was developed by a team from Salatiga, Central Java, called Rock Paper Switchblade. They managed to complete the development of Scrollbearer in just three months during the IGDX Bootcamp program.
Scrollbearer presents stunning visuals using 2.5D pixel art that combines modern and nostalgic elements. Each level is designed in detail with various unique biomes that are interesting to explore. This visual style reminds players of classic games, but remains fresh and relevant in today's gaming era.
In an interview, Bagus Putra Wira Jaya, as Project Lead and 2D Art Lead, explained that their biggest visual inspiration came from the game Octopath Traveler. "For inspiration, the strongest influence is from Octopath Traveler, since we're a 2.5D pixel game. So, we added a few roguelike elements, like dashing with an eye frame," he said.
One of the main attractions of Scrollbearer is the choice of playable characters. Each character has a unique backstory and abilities, providing variety in play style. Players will go on a journey from a weak beginner to a strong hero, with a storyline peppered with various surprises.
Apart from facing various monsters, players also have to collect powerful artifacts and learn new abilities that can be upgraded.
The world of Scrollbearer is full of mysteries and challenges waiting to be uncovered. Players focus not only on combat, but also on exploration. Each different biome has a unique ecosystem that influences the gaming experience. The player's main mission is to convey the prophecy of the arrival of the Chosen One and gather support from the Alliance to face the threatening evil.
Unlike other roguelike games, Scrollbearer features companions who not only accompany the player during the journey, but also interact by providing comments, both praise and criticism, depending on the player's actions. This adds a refreshing element of humor and immediacy to the game.
Scrollbearer is an example of how dedication and solid collaboration can produce high-quality work in a short time. Bagus revealed that the development of this game took only three months. "So we developed this Scrollbearer game in three months during the IGDX Bootcamp," he said. Even though it was relatively short, the results they achieved were very impressive, as evidenced by the enthusiasm shown by the gaming community at IGDX 2024.
