In One Piece series, almost all Strawhat Pirates crew has their nickname, starting from Luffy the Straw Hat, Zoro the Pirate Hunter, Sanji the Black Leg, Nami the Cat Burglar, Robin the Devil’s Child, to Brook the Soul King.

Those nicknames are pointed to their signature traits as well as their strength. As the captain of the crew, did you know that Luffy never gives his crew any nicknames?

This thing seems to spark some curiosity among One Piece fans. One fan even sent a mail to Oda regarding the reason why Luffy never give his crew any nicknames.

On One Piece manga volume 96 which released at the end of March in Japan, Oda replied to the question, by saying why Luffy never give nicknames to his crew due to the strong bond and friendship with him and the others.

“Luffy is the type of person who is difficult to remember someone’s name because he doesn’t care, he gives a nickname to someone based on their look. But when someone joined in as his crew, Luffy will make sure that he remembers his new member,” said Oda as quoted from CBR.

In his adventure along the way, Luffy sometimes recruits a few people to accompany him on finding One Piece treasure. It looks like Luffy doesn’t give his crew nicknames on purpose to know his crew better.

It seems nobody believes that a straightforward person like Luffy has a deep meaning behind his reason.
