Demon Slayer is one of the most popular anime series with a massive fanbase. After the Fire Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku's journey in Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, followed by the Sound Hashira Tengen Uzui in Entertainment District Arc, the third season of the anime Demon Slayer: Swordsmith Village Arc has finally been released. In the latest arc, not only that we’ll see Tanjiro Kamado on his journey, but you’ll also see some actions from the other Hashiras, the Mist Hashira Muichiro Tokito and Mitsuri Kanroji, the Love Hashira.

Of the two Hashiras, Mitsuri Kanroji is one of the most interesting characters. Aside from her qualities as the Love Hashira, Kanroji also has a rather unique nichirin. Unlike most swords that the other Hashiras use, hers is thin, and flexible, making it work like a whip.

You can watch Mitsuri and her sword in action during her visit in the Swordsmith Village as it’s being ambushed by the Upper Moons. There are scenes in this arc, in which Mitsuri Kanroji fights using her whip sword. Although a whip sword may sound like something fictitious, in reality, there’s actually a real-life weapon that inspired her unique sword.

Mitsuri Kanroji’s Sword Real-Life Inspiration

The inspiration for Mitsuri's whip sword is very likely to be the Urumi sword. Urumi is a type of sword originating from South India, which is believed to have been used since ancient times. The blade is very long, thin, and flexible. It can be up to six-feet long and the hilt allows the user to swing and manipulate the blade in different directions.

That's exactly what Mitsuri often does on the battlefield against the demons in Demon Slayer. The urumi sword is usually made of flexible steel, making it similar to a whip as it has the flexibility and the long reach. This sword must be used properly, and in the hands of a trained individual, this sword is safe to use. Otherwise, it can injure the user. No wonder that Mitsuri struggled during her Hashira training.

Demon Slayer Mitsuri Uses Her Sword Like a Whip

If you watch how Mitsuri fights in Demon Slayer, she uses her long and flexible urumi-like sword to attack opponents even from afar and unexpected angles. Despite the flexibility the Mitsuri's sword offers, it is very sharp, which is proven with how she is able to cut many demons at once with ease. Of course, as a Hashira, Mitsuri possesses a high level of mastery of this unique sword.

With the unusual shape and sturdiness – or lack thereof –, her whip sword can be really challenging to use. But Mitsuri manages to prove that her nichirin sword really suits her fighting style and personality, as she can still look elegant and nimble in battles despite using a seemingly uncontrollable sword. Because of this sword, Mitsuri can attack from unexpected angles and makes it difficult for her opponents to predict her next moves.

So, as it turns out, there’s a real-life sword that’s possibly the inspiration for Mitsuri Kanroji’s whip sword in Demon Slayer. So, Demon Slayer fans, what do you think of the Love Hashira’s weapon?
