During the PlayStation 5 (PS5) event on Friday (12/6) midnight, Sony announced two types of PS5. This thing is correspondence with many people’s speculation, but instead of releasing normal and Pro version which has a higher specification, Sony instead releasing PS5 Standard Edition and PS5 Digital Edition. What are the differences between the two?

As the name suggested, PS5 Digital Edition has the specs and capabilities to run the same game similar to the normal counterpart, but this version is made only to run games digitally. This is seen from the removal of the disk drive in Digital Edition.

The removal of disk drive makes Digital Edition more symmetric and intimidating. Without it, it can be assumed that the Digital Edition will come cheaper than the Standard Edtion upon release.

It doesn’t mean PS5 Digital Edtion only has this advantage. Without a disk drive, you cannot play second-hand games that usually sold cheaper. You also need to upgrade the ROM capacity regularly to store so many games in the Digital Edition.

The idea of introducing a digital game console that can only play games digitally is not a new thing in gaming. Microsoft is the first company to do this by introducing the digital version of Xbox One S. This thing was a success, moreover during the pandemic times like this, then it’s strange if Sony taking similar action.

So, which one do you prefer, the Standard version with a built-in disk drive or the Digital version?
