On the internet these days, a meme has been a part of netizen’s lifestyle to make themselves entertained. Various memes created from many things, starting from a scene in the television, movies, to political events from national to international level, can be used as a meme.

But among gamers, there is one meme that once a popular called 'Press F to Pay Respects'. This meme usually used to represent empathy for someone’s sorrow. But, how’s the history of this press F meme itself? Take a look below.

Introduced on Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare

One of Activision's best games ever produced is Call of Duty series. From many installments in this series, there is a particular installment that serves as the origin of this meme; Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare. This game was released around November 2014 and, as we said before, it has one iconic scene that later becomes a joke for players. Similar to other Call of Duty games, Advanced Warfare has campaign mode with its storyline. You will play as Jack Mitchell, a First Class United States’ Private Marine Corps who infiltrates North Korea as well as a terrorist organization that wants to destroy everything on its path. 

At the end of the first mission, Mitchell’s best friend, Will Irons, killed in action. Mitchell’s arm snagged on the vehicle which soon to blow, but Irons pushes Mitchell out before exploding. This thing makes Mitchell losing his left arm as a result. After that, Mitchell will be seen on Irons’ burial ceremony. On the cutscene, the game requires you to press a button to pay respect to Will Irons' heroic deed. In the game, the F button on the keyboard is the default button to do actions in-game, for example, in this case, you will pay respect, as seen on the command text at the screen; ‘Press F to Pay Respects’. Ever since that time, the meme becomes more popular.

Often Used For Trolling

Even though used to describe someone’s grief, it turns out that this meme often used for trolling, especially for Twitch or YouTube streamers who currently playing popular games like PUBG PC or Call of Duty Black Ops 4. The occurrence that often spawned when streamers read comments from viewers and te viewers often write pressing F when they’re on the vehicle. Maybe these steamers didn’t realize that they have been trolled?

Not only used as a trolling on Twitch or Youtube but this meme also popular on social media, especially to describe a sad storyline.
