Netflix’s Devil May Cry anime adaptation has sparked plenty of questions among fans, especially regarding its status within the official storyline. With a more grounded setting and a fresh approach to the characters, many are wondering if this version is part of the canon or simply a loose interpretation. While it’s not a direct continuation of the games, the anime still maintains strong connections to the original source. Let’s take a closer look.

Producer Adi Shankar has never explicitly said that the anime is non-canon, but there are clear differences from the games. For example, in the anime, Lady meets Dante before he learns he’s half-demon—completely opposite to Devil May Cry 3. Lady is also portrayed as a government demon hunter, a background never shown in the games.

Shankar stated that he worked directly with Capcom and was even given access to unreleased lore information. Some story elements in the anime, including Lady’s backstory, are reportedly based on unused drafts from the Devil May Cry 3 manga, which was never completed. While not part of the main timeline, the anime still delivers interesting lore that might enrich fans’ understanding of the DMC universe.

There’s been criticism of Dante’s new design—his shorter hair, immature behavior, and the change in voice actor from Reuben Langdon to Johnny Yong Bosch. However, Shankar explained that this is the youngest version of Dante we’ve ever seen. The anime takes place before the first game, when Dante is still maturing. The setting is also not the game’s world, but rather an alternate version of New York City.

Despite its narrative changes, the anime still references key elements from the games, such as the appearance of Mundus and characters from Devil May Cry 2. This shows that while the series isn’t part of the main timeline, it remains rich with references and relevance for longtime fans.

So, is the anime canon? The answer is clearly not directly. But that doesn’t mean it’s completely disconnected. Netflix’s Devil May Cry is an alternate version that reinterprets Dante’s story, drawing from the original lore while building a new universe. For true fans, it’s still a worthy part of the wider DMC experience.
