There are several characters in anime that were actually raised by animals. How come and who are these characters? Find out more about them in this article!
Anime & Manga | 21 July
Both in animated movies or series, stories revolving around a character who gets raised by animals have been quite common. In western stories, we know Tarzan, who was raised by the gorillas in the jungle, whereas in anime, there are actually numerous characters who share the same fate — for example Inosuke from Kimetsu no Yaiba.
So, who are the anime characters that were raised by animals? Without further ado, let’s get into it.
1. Hashibira Inosuke - Kimetsu no Yaiba
Due to Inosuke's physical strength, as well as his volatile and stubborn demeanors, it is not a surprising fact that Inosuke was actually raised by animals. He was raised by wild boars in the wild, and he wears a mask carved from his deceased adoptive mother's head when he fights.
Due to his abusive biological father, Inosuke's mother fled with baby Inosuke into the forest. Inosuke was then thrown into the river shortly before his biological mother was killed.
Inosuke was eventually found by a herd of wild boars. Granted, Inosuke had a hard time socializing with other humans — as a matter of fact, he tends to get suspicious of others' kindness. But, as the story progresses, he becomes a loyal friend to Tanjiro and co.
2. San - Mononoke Hime
The most famous anime character who was raised by wild animals is probably San from Mononoke Hime. San's parents destroyed the forest, so they were killed by the wolf goddess Moro, who took San as her own.
San inherits the traits of the wolf goddess who raised her: fierce and protective. San serves as a bridge between humans and the environment as a reminder that these two worlds should not be separated.
3. Natsu Dragneel - Fairy Tail
Natsu is a character with a mysterious past. He was born more than 400 years ago. After he passed away, Natsu was revived and then raised by a dragon named Igneel, who then sent Natsu to the future.
Being raised by a dragon has molded Natsu into a stubborn individual. He later becomes a Dragon Slayer who uses elemental fire magic.
4. Hareta - Pokemon Diamond and Pearl Adventure
Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure never got a direct anime adaptation. The series is instead a manga tie-in co-published alongside Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.
The protagonist of the series, Hareta, was basically raised by Pokémon. His adoptive father, Professor Rowan, left Hareta in the wilderness of Route 201 to live among the Pokemon.
But it did give Hareta the ability to communicate with and translate for Pokemon.
5. Tar-Chan - Jungle King Tar-Chan
The 1990s-released Jungle-King Tar-Chan is a parody of Tarzan. The main character, Tar-Chan was raised in the African Savannah by a chimpanzee named Ekechi.
Tar-Chan has a wife named Jane and many animal friends. At first, this show could be described as a gag anime. However, throughout this anime series began to add battle scenes even though in the end, Jungle King Tar-Chan still very much relied on the comedy aspects of the series.

6. Yamato Delgado - Battle B-Daman
Some old-school weebs may be familiar with the anime Battle B-Daman, a tie-in anime for B-Daman toys.
This anime also has a unique protagonist. Until he turned five, Yamato was raised by stray cats on the streets before he was taken and raised by humans. The experience doesn't seem to have affected his personality, but rather surprisingly, he has the ability to grow whiskers just like cats.
7. Mana - Mermaid Saga
Mermaid Saga is a classic series worth watching. The series features cannibalistic mermaids, which is a dark take on the mermaid mythology. Mana is a girl raised by a group of old mermaids. When she turns fifteen, the mermaids grant her immortality, for the sole purpose of eating her to regain their youth.
But eventually, Mana gets saved by the protagonist and avoids cannibalism.
8. Kouya - Twelve Kingdoms
After his parents were unable to take care of him, Kouya of the Twelve Kingdoms series was taken and raised by a Youma named Kiino. In the Twelve Kingdoms universe, Youmas are animal-looking magical creatures.
Most Youma are evil and have no feelings — so Kouya becomes cruel as he grows up, due to his lack of humanity and empathy. He also has no problem killing his enemies and servants.
9. Umi & Sora - Children of the Sea
Children of the Sea offers a unique anime experience, one of the reasons is the two main characters. Umi and Sora were mysteriously raised by dugongs in the depths of the sea. As research subjects, Umi and Sora show that they possess a strange ability that allows them to live under the water.
10. Ren - The Boy and The Beast
The story of this anime movie revolves around Ren, who runs away from home after the passing of his mother. But he ends up being taken away by Kumatetsu from the Beast Kingdom. Despite his reluctance, Ren ends up following Kumatetsu to his house and becomes his disciple. Torn between two worlds, this film presents an emotional story of a found family.
