There are times when an entertainment media can help educate people in a very exciting yet effective way, one of which is the Japanese-language webcomic and manga & anime series Hetalia. Created by Hidekaz Himaruya, Hetalia tells the stories of politics, histories and cultures of the countries, of which these countries are personified as anime characters full of personalities. Because of this unique feature and the abundant amount of Hetalia characters in the series, many people believe Hetalia makes history lessons much more exciting.
The main casts of Hetalia consist of the countries that form the Axis and Allies group during World War II. However, the series recently became a hot topic among the anime communities for finally including an official Indonesian Hetalia character. Immediately, fans fell in love with the official character illustration and released pictures of fanarts and cosplays on the internet.
Among those casts, these are some notable Axis Hetalia characters who will guarantee to make your history lessons more colorful and fun.
Italy
Representing North Italy, Italy was known as Italia Veneziano until 2008 when Himaruya confirmed the official names for some Hetalia characters and he became Feliciano Vargas.
As the grandson of Roma Antiqua, he spent his childhood at Austria’s home along with Hungary and the Roman Empire. Italy’s typically a very cheerful, meek and crybaby who always relies on Germany.
Italy really loves pasta and is very great at drawing, flirting or seeking attention from pretty women, waving a white flag as a sign of defeat, and he frequently says “Ve” by the end of his sentence. He has a brother named Romano who represents South Italy.
In the anime, Daisuke Namikawa fills the role as the seiyuu for both Veneziano and Romano. As for the English dub, Todd Haberkorn voices Veneziano while Ian Sinclair voices Romano. Both young Veneziano and Romano are voiced by seiyuu Aki Kanada and English dubber Brina Palencia since the third season of the anime.

Japan
Japan is also known as Honda Kiku, a thin, short man with black hair and brown eyes. He is generally very shy and loves to isolate himself, but he is also a hard worker.
As a child, China raised him as his young brother, but Japan then attacked him with a katana and scarred China’s back. Since then, Japan denied his brotherhood with China, something he also does to Greece. Japan has an otaku side and he was once a hikkikomori, a reference to Japan’s self-isolation from the rest of the world for centuries during the feudal Bakufu era.
To the Japanese readers, Japan is an audience surrogate and tends to get culture shocks when exposed to the Western cultures. In the anime, he is voiced by Japanese seiyuu Hiroki Takahashi and English dubber Christopher Bevins.
Germany
Unlike many other main characters in the series, Germany’s Hetalia characters doesn’t have a surname and Himaruya only named him Ludwig in 2008.
Germany is a very serious hard worker who believes that bad things are bound to happen if he doesn’t follow things by the book. However, he is a kind fellow and guides Italy and Japan during war training. Some speculate that Germany is actually an adult Roman Empire and it was a topic of discussion in one of the comic strips. Oh, he’s also somewhat of a tsundere.
In referencing Adolf Hitler, Germany once considered his boss as a ‘mad man.’ He is voiced by Japanese seiyuu Hiroki Yatsumoto and English dubber Patrick Seitz.
And those are the Axis Hetalia characters, all of which are hilarious and motivating you to study history lessons. Which Hetalia characters do you like most?
