Anime & Manga | 04 July
Kaiju No. 8 or Monster #8 in English is a cool and recommended manga, written and illustrated by mangaka Naoya Matsumoto which you can read for free on Shonen Jump+ Shueisha website from July 2020. For North American readers, Viz Media also licensed the series.
This recommended manga tells the story of giant monsters known as Kaiju rampaging across Japan with the Japan National Defense Force entrusted to defend the country and eliminate the Kaiju. Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashino are among the people who apply to become the members of the Defense Force after their hometown got destroyed when they were children. Mina has become a renowned commander of the Defense Force’s Third Unit, although Kafka unfortunately fails the test several times and only becomes the janitor crew member of Monster Sweeper Inc. whose job is to dispose of the monsters’ corpses after the battle.
One time, a tiny monster communicates with Kafka and enters his body through his mouth, giving him the ability to turn into a monster called “Kaiju No. 8” but the Defense Force. He still retains his own sense as a monster while getting superhuman strength, thus he decides to escape from the National Defense Force which makes him the first monster to escape the vicinity. But not only he and Mina, here are six characters from Monster #8 that elevate this recommended manga to a higher level:
1. Kafka Hibino
Kafka Hibino a.k.a. Kaiju No. 8 is the main protagonist of Monster #8 who is a member of the Defense Force and ex-employee of professional Kaiju disposer Monster Sweep Inc. as well as a humanoid Kaiju after a tiny Kaiju enters his body.
Although a bit childish, Kafka has a strong dedication and will when pushed to his limit as he’d do everything possible to fulfill his task. He is also a very caring person who dedicates his life to protect other people, save them from dangers and even scold them for not treating themselves better. Kafka even doesn’t care much about his own wellbeing and prioritizes others first. Because of that, he tries to do the best to not disappoint others who put their trust in him, as it can hurt his pride.
But since he’s rather ridiculous, Kafka gets annoyed very easily when people call him “old man” and always reminds the youngsters about his seniority when calling his name.
2. Mina Ashiro
Mina Ashiro in Monster #8 the Kaiju-theme recommended manga is the Captain of the Defense Force Third Division and Kafka Hibino’s childhood friend who’s very serious and strong-willed. She keeps her promise years ago to defeat every Kaiju in existence and dedicates her life to fight them. But beyond her professionalism, she still remembers Kafka’s promise to remain by her side which seems to be one of her weaknesses, even though she was mad at him for not fulfilling his promise at first.
Mina is also a very caring person who does her best to make sure no one’s harmed during the fights and keep the citizens safe.
3. Soshiro Hoshina
Next character from Monster #8 the Kaiju-theme recommended manga is Soshiro Hoshina, Vice-Captain of the Defence Force’s Third Division with a rather laid-back personality who always smiles and occasionally makes fun of Kafka Hibino. But he still knows when to get serious and opens his eyes wide to emphasize the gravity of the situation.
Soshiro has a strong kinship toward the Defense Force and considers the members his family, as such he’s grateful to Mina for allowing him to enter her division. He is very loyal to his role in the army to the point of making it his sole purpose in life.

5. Kikoru Shinomiya
Young lady who graduates from California Neutralization University, Kiroku Shinomiya is the daughter of the Director General of Defense Force, Isao Shinomiya whose goal is to become the leader of the Defense Force in the future.
Due to being the daughter of a high-profile figure, Kikoru is rather arrogant and cocky, full of confidence with her ability as she looks down on the others and shame them. But beyond that, she is a good person at heart who cares for her colleagues and would do her best to prevent people from becoming the victims of the battles. She even shows her loyal side as she thanks Kafka Hibino for saving her and keeps his secret as a humanoid Kaiju.
6. Leno Ichikawa
Last but not least in this Kaiju-theme recommended Monster #8 manga is Leno Ichikawa, a young part-timer who has just joined the professional Kaiju disposer company Monster Sweeper Inc. with a goal to become a member of the Defense Force one day. He is one of the very few people who knows Kafka Hibino’s identity as Kaiju #8 and helps him in many ways.
Calm and composed, Leno is a soft and caring friend despite opposing Kafka for giving up his dream at first, all while being firm and straightforward on the battlefield.
