In Attack on Titan, almost none of the characters are safe as they are constantly living in certain death situations throughout the storyline. Of the many deaths we’ve seen in the series, some left a more devastating impact on fans as fans already had some connection to the characters.

On this occasion, Dunia Games would like to give you a list of the most heartbreaking, tragic character deaths in Attack on Titan. Without further ado, let’s get into it.

1. Erwin Smith

Erwin was the one who led the Survey Corps to charge at Zeke, but he ended up getting hit by a boulder thrown by the Beast Titan. The attack didn't kill him immediately, so Floch brought him back. Leaving the remainder of the Survey Corps with a difficult option as to who would be given the Titan serum to revive them back to life.

Eventually, it was Armin, who was badly injured by the burn, who received the Titan serum instead of Erwin. The decision to choose between Armin and Erwin was a painful one for the survivors, especially for Levi. This whole episode is an emotional one to watch.

2. Carla Jaeger

Fans did not have a lot of opportunities to learn enough about Carla, but the impact of her death is still etched in fans' hearts. When Eren and Mikasa were running home, they found Carla stuck under the rubble of her house.

Hannes then appeared and planned to save Eren and Mikasa, but he was afraid of the approaching Titan. He opted to heed Carla's final request to take her children away, and Carla had to end up being eaten alive by the Smiling Titan.

3. Hannes

Hannes was someone whom Eren, Mikasa, and Armin, held dearly. Despite him failing to save Carla Jaeger, Hannes cared deeply for these children.

When Hannes had the chance to make amends by defeating the very Titan that ate Carla, he was unfortunately unable to defeat her. He gave his best effort and was gallant until the end, but it wasn't enough and Eren had to watch Hannes being eaten alive.

Hannes' death is probably the most painful moment for many Attack on Titan fans.

4. Sasha Blouse

Sasha is a fan favorite in Attack on Titan. Her friendship and interactions with Connie never failed to crack us laughing — sadly, it didn't last long. When the Survey Corps was invading Liberio, Gabi Braun saw Sasha kill several of Liberio's officers.

Therefore, Gabi was determined to take revenge and board the Survey Corps plane. After she killed Lobov who tried to aboard the plane, she used his gear to board with Falco.

Once inside, she fired straight at Sasha, who immediately fell and died moments later.

5. Bertholdt Hoover

When Armin is nearly killed after being burned by the Colossal Titan's steam, Levi gave him the Titan serum to revive him. However, in order to return to his human form, he must eat the user of the Titan Power. Bertholdt happened to have been captured by Eren moments earlier, so he was fed to the pure Titan Armin.

Bertholdt might be Paradis' enemy, but he had developed a camaraderie with the people he had trained with. He found himself in an unfortunate situation that forces him to betray those whom he loved. Unfortunately, his betrayal of the Survey Corps led them to decide to feed him to Armin.

As he was about to get eaten, Bertholdt shouted at his former friends for mercy.

6. Marco Bodt

Marco is one of the best members of the 104th Cadet Corps. He really saw the best in people and was a bright young man. Unfortunately, he was stuck in the wrong place at the wrong time when he overheard Bertholdt and Reiner talking about their Titan.

Realizing their mistake, the Titan shifters chased Marco and, when Annie arrived, retrieved his ODM gear. Left alone on the roof, Marco pleaded and begged for mercy as they let him die.

His screams really haunted the fans.

7. Dot Pixis

As the commander of the Garrison Regiment, Pixis had long been someone of importance within the walls. He was critical to the success of the people of Paradis, but his leadership was cut short when Zeke Jaeger's scream turned him into a Titan.

There was nothing that could be done to turn Pixis into his human form, so the Survey Corps had no other choice but to kill him. It's a grim fact, but the tragedy is one of the most memorable scenes in the Attack on Titan series.

Armin later admitted that he takes responsibility for Pixis' death, and he thanked Pixis for everything he did before killing him.

8. Marlo Freudenberg

The Shiganshina district was overrun by the Titans in the first season, and it took humanity years to recover. Eventually, they took it back as their own, but their victory was short-lived. Zeke Jaeger and several pure Titans trapped the Survey Corps near a wall.

Cornered and unable to escape from the situation, the Survey Corps had no choice but to attack the Beast Titan to draw its attention away from Levi before he could unleash his barrages of attacks. Granted, it took the lives of many people, but the entirety of the Survey Corps bravely faced their death.

In Marlo's final moments, he thought about where Hitch was and what he was doing. This gave him some comfort, but it didn't stop him from ending up getting hit by the rock.
