The Titans in the Attack on Titan series are giant creatures who terrorize Paradis Island. They only eat humans, and ignore any other organisms, and are only pay attention to humans -- although they’re completely self-sufficient in their existence.

Titans get their energy from some kind of photosynthesis process using the sunlight and become dormant at night. It also seems that they don’t possess the ability to digest the humans they eat.

They can last for hundreds or even thousands of years without eating humans. So, why do they have such a strong desire for human flesh? Some of you may have been wondering: “why do Titans only eat humans?”

Find out the answer in this article!

The Reason Why Mindless Titans Only Interested in Eating Humans

Surely there’s a reason why Titans crave human flesh. You may already aware that to pass down the Titan Shifter ability from one generation to another is by injecting the serum made from the spinal fluid into a person, turning them into a Mindless Titan before they consume the Titan Shifter to gain their power.

Now, the reason why they eat humans is that they’re trying to return to their human form, which indicates that they still have consciousness. They eat humans in hope that one of them is a Titan Shifter so that they can return to their human form.

It’s shown when Ymir was in her Mindless Titan form, roaming the Paradis plains for 60 years before encountering a human. she immediately attacked Bertholdt, Reiner, and Marcel when they were young, and ate Marcel, who was a Jaw Titan Shifter.

After she ate Marcel, Ymir returned to her human form. She described her memory as a Titan as a never-ending nightmare.

Ever since then, many fans theorize that Titans are living in agony, trying desperately to return to their human form by looking for a Titan Shifter.

From that point, Titans have been seen as the victims of a terrible experiment, far from their devilish depiction in Season 1 of Attack on Titan, back when the audience wasn’t aware that the Titans were once humans.

So Why Did The Smiling Titan Ignore Bertholdt and Eat Carla Yeager Instead?

When Bertholdt returned from his Colossal Titan form and encountered Dina Fritz’s Smiling Titan, she ignored Bertholdt and entered Shiganshina to eat Carla Yeager.

The reason why Dina Fritz ignored Bertholdt was that she once promised Grisha right before she turned into a Titan that she would find her way to get back to Grisha, no matter how. Thus making Grisha’s family and relatives as Dina’s sole purpose as a Titan.

Since she had a goal in her mind, she ignored Bertholdt, who was a Titan Shifter, and went for Carla instead, without eating anyone else along the way.

So, that’s why Mindless Titans exclusively eat humans. If you find this theory fascinating, feel free to share it on your social media.
