Tsuburaya Productions announced that Kenshi Yonezu (My Hero Academia, March comes in like a Lion, Children of the Sea) will perform the theme song "M87" for Studio Khara's Shin Ultraman (New Ultraman) film. Yonezu is a fan of Anno's work and he offered to collaborate on the film's theme song for Shin Ultraman. The new single for Shin Ultraman will be released on May 18, 2022.

Shin Ultraman will be released in Japan on May 13, 2022. The film has been delayed from its previously planned summer 2021 release schedule, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Takumi Saitou will play the main character in this film, namely a man who can transform into Ultraman. Masami Nagasawa will be the partner of the main character. Hidetoshi Nishijima will also star in the film.

Other cast members in Shin Ultraman include Koji Yamamoto, Tetsushi Tanaka, Daiki Arioka, Akari Hayami, Ryou Iwamatsu, and Toshihiro Wada. There are also Toru Matsuoka, Kyusaku Shimada, Keishi Nagatsuka, and Hajime Yamazaki.

Shin Godzilla director Shinji Higuchi and his Higuchi-Gumi team are directing the Shin Ultraman film project, and Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno is in charge of planning and scripting.

The script draft was completed in February 2019, and Anno has been focusing on the Shin Ultraman project after completing the film Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time, which was released in Japan in March 2021 after several delays. TOHO will distribute Shin Ultraman.
