Five Types of SSDs That You Have to Know!
You have to know beforehand about five types of SSDs before upgrading your laptop or PC by reading this article.
Gadget | 17 January
SSD is an abbreviation of Solid State Drive or Solid State Disk, which is storage hardware using a series of ICs as the memory to store data. This hardware becomes the answer when your laptop or PC is running slower because still using HDD that relies on magnetic discs.
For your information, SSD is different than HDD. HDD still using a mechanical arm that moving from one point to another to write and read data above a magnetic disk, while SSD is like USB Flash Drive without moving components inside and the data stored in microchips. This difference makes SSD work faster than HDD.
Currently, the growth of SSD makes laptop, and PC users must be smart to choose the right thing. There are five types of SSDs that you have to know each difference. If you already know their differences, then you know what you need before purchase. Take a look here.
5. SSD 2,5 Inch
SSD 2,5 Inch is the most common SSDs these days. It comes with various thicknesses in the size of SSD 2,5 Inch sold on the market. It is suitable for replacing your old HDD laptop for better performance. Even though it shaped similarly like HDD, but SSD is more durable from physical damage and magnetic force. Also, it has other advantages, like low power consumed than HDD, no vibration, and no sound produced akind to HDD. The heat also can be reduced as well.
The reading speed on data improves faster. It can run up to 200 MB/seconds up to 550 MB/seconds for the high-tech ones, while HDD's performance is between 50–120MB/seconds.
4. SSD M.2 SATA
If the 2.5″ SSD too large for you, then M.2 SSD maybe can be the answer. M.2 SSD was created for an ultraportable laptop famously known with its thinness. But today, it is now available on the M.2 slot on the new motherboard with many variations. One of them is SSD M.3 SATA that can enter a special slot on the motherboard. Hence the name, this slot connects to the ATA series in the system. The interface on the device’s edge is a side connector on PCB, but it’s opposite with the usual SATA cable.
Currently, there are two kinds of M.2 SATA SSDs, the first is double-sided M.2 that comes with 22 mm x 60 mm size, and the second is M.2 singe sided comes in 22 mm x 80 mm. The difference is on the capacity, as the double sides have more capacity).
3. SSD mSATA
MSATA technology is introduced by Intel when they introduced a way to improve a system’s performance. At that time, SSD attached to the mSATA slot used the Intel Rapid Storage Technology, which made the SSD became a cache in a massive capacity. The size of mSATA SSD is as big as a name card. The advantage of mSATA, aside from its small size, is the low power consumption, durable to vibrations, and has faster bootability. But this technology is rarely found nowadays because it’s less popular than SSD M.2 SATA or SSD 2,5 Inch.
2. SSD PCIe
The next is SSD PCIe that using the PCIe interface. PCIe is one of four factors of SSD shapes. In general, PCIe-based SSDs have better performance than SATA ones that server-based. The format specification for PCIe is developed and maintained by the PCI Special Interest Group (PCI-SIG). One product example of this type is Intel Optane SSD 905P Series and SSD PCIe from other company's products.
1. SSD M.2 NVMe
And for the last one, we have NVMe or Non-Volatile Memory Express on this list. It is a standard or communication protocol developed especially for SSD by vendors like Intel, Samsung, Sandisk, Dell, and Seagate on this day. The NVMe technology was born from SATA and AHCI limitations that had a hard time handling NAND Flash’s speed. At first, this technology was used among enterprises, and the server must serve many users. Physically, it’s similar to SSD SATA NGFF 2280. But the difference is on the connector where SSD NVMe has two ends. For the laptops with M.2 slots but yet to support NVMe, don’t even try to experiment on installing SSD NVMe inside.
So that was various types of SSDs that you have to know. Don’t forget to follow DuniaGames.co.id for information regarding technologies.
