Stephen Chow's antics are indeed very popular with many people in various parts of the world. He uses his talent, dedication, and passion for perfection in each and every one of his films. What are your favorite Stephen Chow films? Here are the 10 best Stephen Chow films that always invite laughter and are often shown during Chinese New Year!
1. Kung Fu Hustle
Using hidden sling straps, camera angle, trampolines, and various special effects, Kung Fu Hustle could easily be the most technically impressive of all Stephen Chow films. This funny, action-packed and heartwarming film has won 11 prestigious awards, which is certainly a testament to its unforgettable quality for international success.
The plot of Kung Fu Hustle revolves around Sing (Stephen Chow), a petty criminal who believes that 'good people never win' because of the humiliations he endured against bullies when he was a child. To survive, Sing tries to blackmail the residents of Pig Sty Alley and his best friend (Lam Chi-Chung) by posing as members of the violent Ax gang. However, the real Ax Gang came to interfere with his life after learning that many Kung Fu Masters were still hiding among the commoners.
2. Shaolin Soccer
This sports-themed comedy film is widely regarded as one of the most successful Hong Kong films of all time. This masterpiece has propelled the Hong Kong comedy film industry to international fame. The popularity of this film is due to the brilliant story idea that is rarely made into a film about a soccer match with various moves that violate the laws of physics as happened in the manga and anime Captain Tsubasa.
The story revolves around Sing (Stephen Chow), a martial arts expert turned street cleaner who struggles to promote the benefits of performing the Shaolin Kung Fu movement to the general public. However, everything changes when he meets a former professional soccer player named 'Golden Leg' Fung (Ng Man-Tat). Fung states that he can help Sing achieve his goals through the medium of football. A motivated Sing begins to gather Shaolin Kung Fu experts to form one of the most bizarre soccer teams ever.
3. Fight Back to School
Hong Kong's highest-grossing film, which broke records in 1991, spawned two more sequels. However, the two sequel films were not as successful as the police-themed films that are often screened on TV. Fight Back to School tells the story of an eccentric cop named Chow Sing Sing (Stephen Chow), who is almost fired for recklessly putting his teammates in danger during a training run.
Sing is given a second chance when a senior officer assigns him to infiltrate a high school with a clumsy old partner (Ng Man-Tat). Together, this hilarious duo of agents try to get back a stolen gun hidden among the students of Edinburgh College. They even get caught in a high-stakes hostage situation towards the end of this exciting film.
4. All for The Winner
This God of Gambler spin off is one of Chow's funniest works, thanks to the unexpected 'mo lei tau'-style comedy. Chow's performance as the hilarious but adorable nephew is absolutely captivating, and his chemistry on the big screen with Ng Man-Tat in this film is arguably the most iconic of all his works.
This 1990 film tells the story of Blackie Tat (Ng Man-Tat) who discovers the mysterious abilities of his nephew Sing (Stephen Chow). Tat tries to exploit his nephew's talent for money by adapting Sing's skills to gambling.
However, when Sing becomes famous in the gambling world, he gets into trouble with the 'God of Gambling' for falling in love with one of his henchmen named Yee-mung (Sharla Cheung). To prove his skills, Sing must bet his way to the top through Hong Kong's most prestigious gambling tournament.
5. King of Comedy
This is a film with a title that matches the title of the main actor. This unforgettable drama comedy is considered to be an autobiographical work that chronicles the beginning of Stephen Chow's career. The film depicts the story of Wan Tin-Sau (Chow), an acting teacher for his local community center who works as an extra on film projects.
Despite being ridiculed for taking on less important roles, Wan persevered with his passion for acting and was eventually rewarded with a leading role alongside a famous actress. In addition, Wan also finds love in his career, which is a serious relationship with one of his students named Piu Piu (Cecilia Cheung).
However, maybe this part of the film's autobiographical elements finally stops, because the plot of the story then turns ridiculous. Wan instead engages in undercover action complete with a shootout scene. Even so, this classic film remains a cinematic experience that is enjoyable for its audience.

The comedic genius of Stephen Chow in this film, who plays the Magic Monkey who makes the monk Tang Xuanzang (Law Kar-Ying) sing with a rendition of The Platters' song Only You, is very iconic. While there are countless films or TV series adaptations that chronicle the journey of the Magical Monkey to the west in search of scriptures out there, none can match the Hong Kongers' favorite version of this two-part film.
9. The Royal Tramp
The film is adapted from the popular wuxia novel entitled The Deer and The Cauldron by Louis Cha. Set in the early Qing Dynasty, Stephen Chow plays an intelligent and fast-talking poet who is accidentally caught in a series of conspiracies. This includes a plot to assassinate the emperor, as well as dealing with a princess who falls in love with him but the poet is unable to truly reciprocate her love.
