From Nintendo’s Game Boy to Nintendo Switch, handheld consoles have continued to evolve for years and keep on gaining their popularity in the gaming community. Yet, unfortunately, while there are many gamers who play games on the latest consoles, they may have forgotten the glorious handheld consoles from the good-old-days like the ones below!

1. Nokia N-Gage

Nokia N-Gage was released for the first time in 2002, with the production stopped in 2005. The handheld console is a hybrid of a Nokia phone and a handheld gaming of its time. Unfortunately, the enthusiasm from gamers towards the phone wasn’t as high as expected.

The device was only sold for a few million units before the production was eventually stopped. There are several popular game titles for this device, such as Call of Duty, Tomb Raider, and The Sims Bustin’ Out.

2. PSP Go

Sony Playstation’s consoles are still the most popular in the gaming world today. The Japanese company’s sale numbers for handheld consoles are also impressive. PSP and Vita have become the mainstay handheld consoles since the first time they hit the market. Yet there are still some that are not as popular as those two, like PSP Go.

PSP Go was released for the first time in 2009 with smaller design than the original PSP. The buttons are no longer on the sides of the screen but on a sliding mechanism below it. The console didn’t last for long, and its production was stopped after only 2 years.

3. Watara Supervision

Released in 1992, Watara Supervision was a rival to Nintendo Game Boy. At that time, it costs 49.95 USD, a lot cheaper than Game Boy at 89.95 USD. The low price was expected to persuade gamers to prefer Watara over Game Boy.

The console was quite unique since it can be connected to a TV and played as a home console. This feature made it superior compared to Nintendo at that time. Yet, sadly, as Nintendo grows into a household name, the console starts to get forgotten.

4. Tiger Electronics’ Game.com

The Game.com, or just simply game com, was released in 1997 to 2000. It was the first handheld console that features internet access and a touchscreen before the arrival of Nintendo DS.

Despite its uniqueness and being heavily advertised, Game.com suffered substantial losses due to poor sales. As a result, the console was starting to get forgotten by many.

5. Atari Lynx

Atari Lynx was known as the first full-colored handheld console which was produced from 1989 to 1995. The console runs games from the Atari cartridges, which already was a big name in the gaming industry at that time.

While Atari was successful in its initial release, the spotlight was stolen by Game Boy that was released a few months earlier. This made Atari’s popularity to fade slowly. Perhaps there are just a few people who still remember or know about this legendary console.

6. Sega Game Bear

Sega Game Bear was produced from 1990 to 1997. Game Bear was known as the handheld version of the Sega Master System and was designed to compete with Game Boy with its original shape and the full-color screen.

The glaring flaw of this console is the short-lived battery power that makes it far less-durable for prolonged gaming. As Sega shifted their focus on other projects, the console began to be forgotten.

7. WonderSwan Color

WonderSwan Color was developed by Bandai and released exclusively in Japan in 2000. Alongside WonderSwan Original and SwanCrystal, WonderSwan Color was one of the consoles released from 1999 to 2004. Sadly, since it was exclusively released in Japan, not many people even aware of its existence.

8. Xperia Play

Xperia Play was released in 2009 until it was stopped being produced in 2011. Initially, the games for this console was rumored to be exclusive, yet it wasn’t. With a similar design to PSP Go, gamers can play various Playstation and PSP games. Unfortunately, the console was only popular in the same year of its release.

9. Gamate

Gamate was a console developed by Bit Corps. The console was released in several countries in the early 1990s but stopped production since then.

It was due to Gamate’s far less superior sales compared to Nintendo Game Boy and even other handheld consoles at the time. The console has since long forgotten, and its 70 games have become very rare to find.

10. Gizmondo

Gizmondo was a handheld console released by Tiger Telematics in 2005 and was stopped being produced in 2006. What contributed to the console short-lived existence was the low sales, fewer than 25,000 units.

Around 14 games were released for this console. Eight titles were released initially, with six other titles released exclusively in Europe. Of all the games that were sold, none was quite a hit, which subsequently resulted in the company’s bankruptcy. Which resulted in Gizmondo stopped production.

Those were the 10 forgotten handheld consoles around the world. If you found this fascinating, feel free to share this article with your pals. And stick around for other gaming console discussions on DuniaGames!
