Yakuza Baka Mitai Lyrics in English
(Below is the official singable translation of the lyrics to Baka Mitai as written in Yakuza: Like a Dragon.)
I've been a fool, and you've been childish
You fell down, you got hurt chasing sweeter dreams
Never could hide the truth in your eyes
That's how I knew that smile was a lie
I love you is something you never say
Couldn't get it out, always just pulled away
So then why, please won't you tell me why
You could find the words to say goodbye
I'm such a mess, I'm lost, I'm no good at this
I'm in love, still in love, still in love with you
Hard as I try, I can't even drink this pain away
Memories of you, twisting my view, I've been a fool
(This is the end of the official singable part of the song)
What a fool; honestly, what a fool
Filled to the brim with faith in you
I play the part of the strong woman and bathe in the suffocating night air
Since I've been alone, three years have passed
Even the city streets have changed
But even so, even so, why is it
I'm still left behind in the past?
Really, you're a no-good man, no good at all
My matching ring, I take it off
Serves you right! I'm relieved
Yet naively I still wait—what a fool
It's no use, no use, no use at all
I love you, I love you far too much
No matter how strong the drink
The memories don't fade—what a fool
Really, you're a no-good man, no good at all
My matching ring, I take it off
Serves you right! I'm relieved
So then what are they, these tears—what a fool
The Meaning of Baka Mitai
From the music alone, the song already sounds like a “sad” song, and so do the lyrics. Baka Mitai is one of the karaoke songs that appears in the games Yakuza 0, Yakuza 5, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, and Like a Dragon: Ishin! This song is sung by Kazuma Kiryu, Shun Akiyama, Taiga Saejima, and Yu Nanba, while in the Like a Dragon: Ishin!, this song is sung by Sakamoto Ryoma. Baka Mitai itself is translated to "I'm a fool".
This song tells of the sadness felt by the singer because his lover left him. The singer realized that all this time he had been lied to by his girlfriend because he had never been loved. However, even though he has been hurt in such a way, he still loves his lover. Therefore lies the stupidity of the singer, which the song tells us about.
Actually, this song sounds ambiguous because it is not explained the gender who sings this song and to who it is addressed (in the context of gender) even in the Japanese version itself. The lyrics sound very feminine, but the song is sung by men.
If we read the translated version by fans before Yakuza 5 Remaster came out, fans described the singer as a woman, while her lover is a man, but this is reversed when Yakuza 5 Remaster came out. So which of you often listens to this Baka Mitai song?
