Magic: The Gathering fans are gearing up for one of the most talked-about releases of the year. On September 26, 2025, Wizards of the Coast will launch the Spider-Man set, a Marvel crossover under Universes Beyond. Unlike a regular expansion, this one contains only 231 base cards, smaller than Edge of Eternities, which featured 276.
No Commander Decks, Fans Disappointed
The biggest surprise is the absence of Commander decks. Given Commander’s popularity, many players were let down. Head designer Mark Rosewater explained that the Marvel x MTG partnership was originally planned as a small set. As development went on, ideas expanded, but to keep the release schedule intact, Commander products had to be sacrificed.
Avengers and Infinity Gauntlet Hints
Interestingly, Rosewater’s comments sparked even more speculation. Fans now believe a full-scale Avengers crossover could be next. The strongest hint comes from the inclusion of the Soul Stone card in Spider-Man, clearly pointing toward the Infinity Gauntlet saga.
If Thanos makes his debut, it’s hard to imagine him without the Avengers. Fans are already imagining Infinity Stone mechanics or even a Thanos Planeswalker card that could dominate the battlefield.
A Packed Release Schedule
Not all feedback has been positive. Many players argue that MTG’s release pace is too aggressive. After Edge of Eternities in July, Spider-Man follows in September, with the Avatar set slated for November. Three major releases in four months feels overwhelming for both fans and the design team.
Some believe the lack of Commander decks is a direct result of this tight schedule, as the team simply didn’t have enough time to flesh everything out.
Universes Beyond Debate
Beyond scheduling, the ongoing debate about Universes Beyond legality continues. Some players worry that too many crossovers could destabilize Standard format, while others fear design quality will drop under the pressure of constant releases.
Still, Marvel fans remain excited. The potential of Infinity Stones as card mechanics is enough to keep the hype alive.
Spider-Man: Just the Beginning
With all the excitement and criticism, one thing is clear: Spider-Man isn’t the endgame. It’s the opening act for something much bigger — possibly an Infinity War-style crossover on the MTG tabletop.
For fans of both Marvel and Magic, September 2025 is shaping up to be unforgettable. The real question now is: not just “how will Spider-Man play?” but “who’s coming next?”
