Shogakukan's Sunday Webry manga site announced that the manga adapted from the light novel series by Natsu Hyuga with the title The Apothecary Diaries announced that it would take a hiatus for the manga by Minoji Kurata, The Apothecary Diaries or the full title Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Mao Mao no Kokyu Nazotoki Techo. This hiatus was announced because the mangaka would take time off to care for her child after giving birth last January. Kurata also announced plans to continue the manga this summer.

The Apothecary Diaries manga by Minoji Kurata itself was first launched in Shogakukan's Monthly Sunday GX magazine in August 2017. Sunday Webry started publishing the manga online in December 2018. Then Shogakukan published the first volume of the manga in February 2018. Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Mao Mao no Kokyu Nazotoki Techo is a separate manga adaptation of the original light novel series from Nekokurage's manga adaptation entitled The Apothecary Diaries.

The manga adaptation of Nekokurage's The Apothecary Diaries itself was launched in Square Enix's Monthly Big Gangan magazine in May 2017. Meanwhile, this series was first started by Natsu Hyuga who started the original story series on the Shosetsuka Ni Naro website in October 2011. The novel was first printed and published by Shufunotomo in August 2014 with illustrations by Touko Shino.

This light novel and manga series ultimately inspired an anime adaptation which premiered in October 2023 with the first three episodes and continued to be broadcast for two courses (half a year) with a total of 24 episodes until March 2024. Meanwhile, the second season of the anime is scheduled to arrive in 2025.

This series tells the story of Maomao, a 17-year-old female pharmacist in a brothel area who is suddenly kidnapped and sold until she becomes a servant in the royal palace. Due to her experience living with her father who was a medicine expert, while at the palace Maomao became curious about a rumor involving the mystery of a curse between the concubines and ladies-in-waiting.

Thanks to her ability, knowledge, and sharp analysis, Maomao managed to find a cure for a disease circulating among the concubines, allowing her to be promoted from a low-ranking servant. Her success in finding a solution to this existing problem attracted the attention of a eunuch named Jinshi and ultimately made Maomao get involved with various mysteries regarding various illnesses and mysterious events that occurred around the palace.
