Nintendo has recently shared new updates regarding the game compatibility on their upcoming console, Switch 2. In an official announcement from early April 2025, the Japanese gaming giant revealed that they are currently testing the system’s ability to run thousands of titles from the previous generation.
Rather than solely focusing on hardware or design upgrades, Nintendo is now emphasizing backward compatibility the capability of Switch 2 to play games from the original Switch. Based on the latest data, over 15,000 titles are being tested, with around 25% confirmed to run smoothly without any major issues. This translates to roughly 4,000 games that are expected to be playable right out of the box.
Interestingly, nearly all of Nintendo’s first-party titles including The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario, and Animal Crossing are reportedly performing well on the new console. However, there are a few exceptions. One notable case is Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit, which is no longer compatible due to Switch 2’s display not supporting the original VR accessory.
Additionally, motion-based games like Ring Fit Adventure and 1-2-Switch may face issues because the new Joy-Con controllers use a different infrared sensor system. The workaround? Players can still pair their old Joy-Con controllers with Switch 2 to continue enjoying those titles.
Since the global release of Switch 2 is scheduled for June 5, 2025, these compatibility tests are still ongoing. Nintendo is expected to update the results closer to launch.
With this inclusive approach, Nintendo appears committed to delivering a seamless gaming experience for both long-time fans and newcomers. So, what do you think will you be revisiting your old collection on the new console?
