Since the first One Piece episode aired in 1999 until now, Mayumi Tanaka has been the voice actress for Monkey D. Luffy, the main character. In her latest interview on the Japanese TV show, 7Rules, Mayumi Tanaka said about her role as Luffy in the One Piece anime.
Due to her age (67 years old), she wanted to reduce her activities as a voice actor. That's why grandma Mayumi doesn't want to take another job that can increase her working hours. She also revealed that Luffy will be the last male character voiced.
This indicates that after One Piece ends, Mayumi Tanaka might retire as a voice actor or it could be that she only voices characters who are easily voiced. Hopefully, Mayumi Tanaka will always be healthy until One Piece ends so that we can always hear Luffy's distinctive voice!
