Now, you probably know the soccer game by Konami by the name eFootball PES 2020. However, before that there is a long history that becomes the witness how this one of the most popular soccer games in the world is growing. Starting from the “dualism” of the names which are Winning Eleven and Pro Evolution Soccer, to its rivalry with other soccer game: FIFA.
Although these two games are made and developed by Konami, perhaps many people are confused about these two soccer games. What is Winning Eleven? Or Pro Evolution Soccer (PES)? To answer the question about the differences between Winning Eleven and PES, let’s start with the early history of these soccer games.
International Superstar Soccer
Neither Winning Eleven, nor Pro Evolution Soccer. Konami first released their soccer game under the name International Superstar Soccer (ISS) back in 1994 in Japan. Although it was the first series, who would have guessed that ISS managed to win the attention of the soccer game fans both in Japan and worldwide.
The feature that ISS offered became the reason why this game was easily accepted by the market. Some of its interesting features including Open Game (friendly match with the player or CPU), International Cup (World Cup match simulation with 32 teams), World Series (league competition), to Training (training mode to train soccer abilities).
Quite successful on its debut, in 1995 Konami released their second series titled International Superstar Soccer Deluxe / World Soccer Winning Eleven for Nintendo 64 and PlayStation in 1996. ISS Deluxe offers smoother animations and more variations of formations that can be used. Unfortunately, due to licensing issues it only allows the gamers to only play world players whose names have been changed.
Available for PlayStation
A year later, Konami released International Superstar Soccer 64 or better known as Jikkyou World Soccer in Japan. In the same year, International Superstar Pro or Winning Eleven 97 was also released specifically for the PlayStation console. This also makes it as the first ISS series that debuted at the console made by Sony.
Winning Eleven 97 comes with a more complete features such as 32 international teams, four new stadiums, 13 variations of formation, to Penalty Kick mode.
In the following years Konami continued to release the ISS series with various names; ISS Pro 98 or World Soccer Jikkyou Winning Eleven 3 ~ World Cup France 1998 ~ (1998), ISS Pro Evolution or World Soccer Jikkyou Winning Eleven 4 (1999), and ISS Pro Evolution 2 or World Soccer Jikkyou Winning Eleven 2000: U-23 Heno Chousen Medal (2000).
The Appearance of Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) Series
In 2001, Konami released the sequel of ISS for PlayStation 2 console under the name Pro Evolution Soccer for the European version and Winning Eleven 5 for the Asian and North American versions.
Starting from here, these two Konami's games available in slightly different versions. Because the development of PES game was taken over by Konami Computer Entertainment Osaka (KCEO) while Winning Eleven was handed over to Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo (KCET).
In 2002, Winning Eleven and PES released their newest series. You could say these two Konami games are quite successful in their own markets. PES has successfully competes with FIFA games in Europe. While Winning Eleven dominates the soccer games in Asia, including in Indonesia which happens to be famous in many PlayStation rentals.
In the following years, Konami continued to release the PES series for the European region and Winning Eleven for Asia region, especially Japan.
Until finally this year Konami released the game under the name eFootball Winning Eleven 2020 for Japan and eFootball Pro Evolution Soccer 2020 for the international market.
In Indonesia itself, the Winning Eleven series is quite dominating. However, since PlayStation 1 console became unpopular, the PES series has slowly been accepted by the gamers to this date.

Although these games were made by the same game developer, but there is a slight difference between PES and Winning Eleven. For example, in the Winning Eleven version there is a choice of Mandarin language as well as Japanese commentators.
