A lot of people have been wondering why the first Rurouni Kenshin movie that came out earlier was The Final instead of The Beginning?

Since the first Rurouni Kenshin movie came out in 2012, fans of the samurai with the cross scar on his cheek have fallen in love with Warner Bros’ Rurouni Kenshin The Final a.k.a. Samurai X live action movies and their high attention to details and faithfulness to the source materials.

This year, there’s going to be two Rurouni Kenshin movies released quite close to each other like the movies Rurouni Kenshin Kyoto Inferno and Rurouni Kenshin Legend Ends which came out in 2014. That said, a lot of people have been wondering why the first Rurouni Kenshin movie that came out earlier was The Final instead of The Beginning? Perhaps these are the reasons why the release schedule for both movies are swapped:

1. Enishi’s Appearance in The Final Forces Kenshin to Remember His Past in The Beginning

After enjoying a brief period of peace in Japan, Rurouni Kenshin The Final depicts a new threat from Enishi, Kenshin’s ex-brother-in-law. This Rurouni Kenshin movie begins by showing Enishi’s return to Japan through Yokohama International Harbor, this time as a Shanghai mafia who’s about to conduct terror acts he calls Jinchu towards a number of Kenshin’s close acquaintances.

At first, Kenshin thought he was just another mafia doing evil deeds for his organization or country, but later on he realizes the whole affair is much more personal. After meeting Enishi on a bridge, Kenshin has no choice but to remember his past as the Hitokiri Battousai which is going to be depicted in the upcoming Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning. This may be a logical reason behind the release of Rurouni Kenshin: The Final first before The Beginning.

2. Enishi’s Motive in Committing Jinchu in The Final Is Kenshin’s Tragedy in The Beginning

Every Rurouni Kenshin movie has a cause-and-effect relation between each other. This time, Rurouni Kenshin: The Final centers around Enishi Yukishiro’s Jinchu vendetta to instill misery toward Kenshin Himura as he has experienced his whole life. But why does Enishi suffer so much and hold a deep grudge toward Kenshin? Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning is going to answer that question.

Kenshin’s tragedy which led to the death of his wife during a life-threatening fight causes some misunderstanding, as Enishi believes Kenshin who killed his sister Tomoe’s fiance also killed Tomoe herself, which led to his everlasting misery. In reality, Tomoe sacrificed herself to protect Kenshin’s life. Even though Kenshin was the one who killed her fiance and took away her happiness, it was him as well who gave her new happiness as a married couple.

3. More Intense Conflict in The Beginning

Rurouni Kenshin movies have always delivered some top-notch conflicts. While Rurouni Kenshin: The Final depicts a rather intense conflict, Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning is going to showcase an even more intense conflict and fight.

Think about it, Rurouni Kenshin: The Final only showcases the major conflict between Kenshin and Enishi with his underlings. However, Kenshin might have to face even greater conflict in Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning as he’s possibly going to fight Shinsengumi, Pro-Bakufu government, traitors among the Meiji Knights, Tomoe herself and even himself as he struggles to kill despite not wanting to do so. With such a great level of conflict escalation in both Rurouni Kenshin movies, the audiences won’t feel like there’s an anticlimax in any of those movies.

4. The Final Centers Around Personal Vendetta, But The Beginning Centers Around Japan’s Revolution

There’s going to be an escalation in the excitement between the two Rurouni Kenshin movies, hence why they release The Final first before The Beginning. Whereas Rurouni Kenshin: The Final centers around Enishi’s personal vendetta, Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning is going to center around the nation's revolution with a colossal war looming in the corner.

Perhaps the most anticipated setting in the upcoming Rurouni Kenshin movie is the Bakufu war before the Meiji Restoration, a turning point in the course of history caused by a war between the pro-Shogun government and the pro-Emperor revolution army. Surely, a conflict of this magnitude is going to be much greater than a mere vendetta from the brother-in-law

5. Darker Plot in The Beginning

When you think about it carefully, you’ll notice that both Rurouni Kenshin movies that are released this year have different color tones. Whereas Rurouni Kenshin: The Final has a brighter and more colorful tone, Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning has a darker and almost monochromatic tone.

This may be done intentionally by the art team of both Rurouni Kenshin movies, as they wish to set both movies apart by implying a difference in the plot. Therefore, it can be said that Rurouni Kenshin: The Final is a warm-up for the darker, more tragic Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning.

6. The Beginning Is Encore for Fans After Experiencing The Final

The success of every Rurouni Kenshin movie leaves a very pleasant aftertaste for the fans and audience, including Rurouni Kenshin: The Final which proves to be yet another success with high view count and ratings.

Perhaps as an encore to the already successful Rurouni Kenshin: The Final, Warner Bros intentionally release Rurouni Kenshin: The Beginning which is going to have even greater impact for the audiences.

These are all the hypothetical reasons about why the release schedule of both Rurouni Kenshin movies is swapped. Which one do you anticipate the most, The Final or The Beginning? Let us know in the comment section below!
