Mobile Legends has become one of the most popular games in Indonesia. Once underestimated during its early release—criticized as a low-quality mobile copy of PC MOBAs—it has instead experienced tremendous growth.
The moment Mobile Legends exploded in popularity marked one of the most remarkable phenomena in Indonesian gaming history. No other game has replicated this level of cultural penetration, as MLBB has reached far beyond traditional gamers and into the general public.
Now entering its eighth year, Mobile Legends has only grown larger, becoming one of the top MOBA games in the region. Its esports scene has also expanded massively, drawing attention from fans and professionals alike.
Even billionaire and crypto expert Timothy Ronald has taken notice of Mobile Legends' dominance. During a livestream session with his partner Kalimasada at Akademi Kripto, the topic unexpectedly came up.
Timothy Ronald Had Not Expected Mobile Legends to Be This Big
As someone who has mastered the crypto space and achieved immense wealth, Timothy admitted that he had completely missed the Mobile Legends market.
He was among the many who had underestimated the game at first, failing to consider the reality that most Indonesians had not been able to play PC MOBAs due to hardware limitations.
"It was a phenomenon that shocked me at the time. I had seen Mobile Legends for a while. When it launched on mobile, as someone who played PC MOBAs, I thought, ‘What kind of game is this? A copycat,’" he said.
"But I hadn’t seen the trend where many Indonesians couldn’t afford a PC. I couldn’t afford one either back then—I played on a laptop. I only bought a PC after I had earned some money. Most people didn’t have the money to buy a PC and went to internet cafés instead. When the trend shifted to mobile phones, it became a huge change. It was a trend I hadn’t seen coming," he explained.
"Back then, to play together, people had to go home or to internet cafés, turn on Dota, and play. Now, they hang out. I once saw people hanging out at my Holywings outlet, five of them playing Mobile Legends together. It was unique," he added.
What Timothy had initially dismissed as a passing mobile fad has proven to be a lasting social and cultural force in Indonesia. His story reflects how Mobile Legends has reshaped the gaming landscape—making competitive gaming accessible to anyone with a smartphone.
