When you get into Capcom’s Monster Hunter game series, you will meet various kinds of monsters; from the cute ones like Dodogama and Kelbi to the terrible ones such as Rathalos and Brachydios. Most of them also have a size far beyond our Hunter character. Well, out of the hundreds of types of monsters in the Monster Hunter world, here is a list of 21 giant monsters whose length can compete with mountains and even the Petronas Towers!

21. Fatalis

  • First appearance: Monster Hunter (2005)

Although Fatalis is called the strongest monster in all of the Monster Hunter legends, in terms of size there are still many who can beat it. Even so, of course, its strength does not lie in its 40 meter body.

Said to have a great hatred for humanity and even other monsters, Fatalis’s immense burst of flames destroyed the mighty Schrade Castle and everything in it in just one night. Now the Black Dragon is occupying the ruins of the castle as its home. According to a legend, it also has the power of regeneration, even able to make itself whole again from a single scale, and it's incredibly thick scales are made of melted armor of every Hunter it killed.

Even clothes made of its scales are said to affect anyone’s mind who wears them for too long. Then one day they would disappear without a trace -- as if their minds were being controlled by Fatalis to find a place to be born again. According to some people, weapons from Fatalis scales when held will emit a terrible scream and make the user thirsty for blood.

20. Crimson Fatalis

  • First appearance: Monster Hunter Freedom (2006)

One of the much more lethal members of the Fatalis family. From an ordinary Fatalis, it would transform into a Crimson Fatalis with reddish scales that glow in the dark and a golden belly due to its relentless rage. Crimson Fatalis even got the ability to summon a meteor shower to finish off its opponents.

19. White Fatalis

  • First appearance: Monster Hunter Freedom 2 (2007)

According to the legend, White Fatalis will appear at the top of the old Tower during a lunar eclipse after Fatalis is expelled from Castle Schrade, coming back to reclaim his throne. Different from Fatalis and Crimson Fatalis, its body is now covered in glowing scales and white manes from head to tail.

White Fatalis no longer only relies on fireballs and superheated flames as its weapons, but can also summon giant thunderbolts from the sky.

18. Yama Tsukami

  • First appearance: Monster Hunter Freedom 2 (2007)

A strange Elder Dragon with an octopus-like body that’s covered in moss, algae, and other plants. It can float in the air thanks to a natural gas produced by its body. Yama Tsukami is estimated to live for thousands of years.

Yama Tsukami is a dangerous monster that can become very aggressive when cornered, but may be docile after eating. Omnivorous, it can swallow entire forests, lands, and lakes in one suck. It will also eat any animal that got sucked up with those forests and lakes.

From consuming trees and lakes, its 41 meter body then turned into a kind of small ecosystem for a number of insects and small animals such as the Great Thunderbug and created a symbiotic relationship. These Great Thunderbugs will help Yama Tsukami ward off creatures or people who try to harm it.

17. Yama Kurai

  • First appearance: Monster Hunter Frontier G8 (2015)

A close relative of Yama Tsukami, however, its body is bushier and more aggressive. Yama Kurai can produce several types of poison from their tentacles or by releasing poisonous gas. When it felt that its life was nearing its end, Yama Kurai's upper body, including the leaves, changed color from green to orange.

16. Xeno’Jiiva

  • First appearance: Monster Hunter: World (2018)

When the Elder Crossing incident, times when the Elder Dragons migrated to the New World, which was supposed to happen every 100 years became a once-in-a-decade event, the Hunter's Guild sent the Research Commission to investigate it. They then discovered a new species of Elder Dragon in the New World's underground. With a bluish transparent skin, it is suspected that the creature named Xeno'Jiiva absorbs the bioenergy released from the bodies of the Elder Dragons who ended their lives in the New World and secretes a kind of pheromone to attract other Elder Dragons so that it can hatch quickly.

If he hatched and managed to grow up, many people believed that the collection of Elder Dragon's bioenergy that Xeno'Jiiva had gathered would be able to destroy a part of the world so that it was worthy of being called the Emperor of Elder Dragons. The body of this monster is estimated to be 45 meters long and 12 meters high.

15. Safi’Jiiva

  • First appearance: Monster Hunter: Iceborne (2019)

When Xeno'Jiiva grows up and molts many times its body will turn into a reddish dragon named Safi'Jiiva. Still storing an enormous amount of bioenergy in its body, the Red Dragon certainly has terrifying power. It has the ability to absorb the bioenergy accumulated in its nest in the Secluded Valley if it feels its body is heavily damaged. Afterwards, Safi'jiiva was able to condense the bioenergy into a star-like ball that turned into a violent explosion when it hit the ground and instantly scorched the bodies of the Hunters who failed to protect themselves. This ultimate attack is dubbed as The Sapphire of the Emperor.

Reportedly there is only one other creature that is able to compete with this 47 meter-sized monster. Namely Alatreon, the Blazing Black Dragon.

14. Ceadeus

  • First appearance: Monster Hunter tri (2010)

A giant monster that lives in the deepest part of the ocean and is rarely seen. However, like whales in the real world, Ceadeus needs oxygen to breathe. Fortunately through a special organ called the Luminous Organ it is able to grow special algae with its "beard" and get oxygen when they photosynthesize. With this symbiotic relationship, Ceadeus is able to stay at the bottom of the ocean without needing to rise to the surface for months.

Even though it is categorized as an Elder Dragon, this 58 meter big monster is actually not aggressive. However, because its horns would keep grow non-stop, it often sharpens them on any surface it could find underwater. Due to its large body and strength, this act often creates earthquakes and/or tsunamis that can sink an island. According to research Ceadeus and Jhen Mohran are descendants of the same type of monster.

13. Goldbeard Ceadeus

  • First appearance: Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (2011)

This Goldbeard Ceadeus subspecies is similar in size but lives in much deeper parts of the ocean floor. Its golden body color is a side effect of the abundance of bacteria produced by algaes, which allows it to also live on the seabed without having to take oxygen to the surface. Its movements became fiercer than the usual Cadeus, presumably because its eyes are now completely covered by its own horns.

12. Dire Miralis

  • First appearance: Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (2011)

Having a body shape similar to Fatalis even to the point of having wings, many refer to Dire Miralis as the Incarnation of the Fatalis. Even so, because it lives underwater, its wings "evolved" into special plates to release magma and hot liquids in its body into the atmosphere. Even to the point of dropping meteors from the sky.

Dire Miralis lives alone and is rarely seen by mankind not only because it hates all living things. But also because of his extraordinary body heat, to the point of being able to boil seawater and kill all creatures around him in one fell swoop. According to the legend, this 62-meter Elder Dragon made the Tainted Sea region turn blood red in ancient times.

11. Lao-Shan Lung

  • First appearance: Monster Hunter (2005)

This 69 meters long dragon is said to be like a walking mountain. Living for hundreds of years and rarely migrating, a thick skin made of mineral particles enveloped this monster's skin. Its enormous size makes Lao-Shan Lung dubbed as the Walking Natural Disaster because every footstep is capable of creating landslides and collapsing buildings.

There's still a lot that's unknown about Lao-Shan Lung, but despite its dangerous strength, it doesn't appear to be that aggressive. Even so, this monster sometimes showed itself when it tries to escape from the Black Dragon.

An incident involving a group of Hunters when facing Lao-Shan Lung created a rule that forced Hunters to only hunt in groups of a maximum of four people. Kokoto’s Village Chief loses his fiancé while the five of them are hunting a Lao-Shan Lung. After the four survivors retired, the story spread quickly and many Hunters experienced similar tragedies when they were hunting with five or more people.

The giant Wyverian leader of Dundorma City and the Elder Dragon Observation Team, His Immenseness, is said to have beheaded a Lao with his sword and he now often wrestles with the monster whenever he encounters one another.

10. Ashen Lao-Shan Lung

  • First appearance: Monster Hunter Freedom (2006)

Actually Ashen Lao-Shan Lung is the same as ordinary Lao-Shan Lung, but because it often lives in volcanic areas for much longer, this type of Lao-Shan Lung has an ashen grayish skin from the many volcanic materials attached to its skin.

9. Jhen Mohran

  • First appearance: Monster Hunter tri (2010)

With a body size of 111.6 meters and 20% of which is a pair of giant tusks, Jhen Mohran is a giant monster that is able to thrive in the sand dunes thanks to its strong legs and tusks. It consumes the nutrients contained in the sand by filtering the sand that enters its mouth, then expels the dregs through a number of blowholes in its body. Sometimes, bad winds catch the sand and carry it as a sandstorm toward various desert settlements.

Due to living in the sand with large volumes of lungs, usually Jhen Mohran's back creates various kinds of iron ore and other materials that are so valuable that even if their appearance can be catastrophic, it is also considered a symbol of wealth.

The appearance of a Jhen Mohran is usually accompanied by a group of Delex and is often used as a signal for the Desert Ship to find them. Although not aggressive, it will still respond to Desert Ship attacks that want to mine material from its body.

8. Hallowed Jhen Mohran

  • First appearance: Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (2011)

This Jhen Mohran subspecies lives in much deeper parts of the sand and the minerals that grow throughout its body are considered to be even more valuable because they undergo a longer formation process.

Hallowed Jhen Mohran's body is darkish purple in color because of the unique minerals in the deep sand combined with its bodily fluids that also allows it to live longer. Jhen Mohran usually comes to the surface for air during the day but Hallowed Jhen Mohran appears on the surface for air at night. Its bigger lungs also allow it to stay underground longer and only needs to surface every half a day.

7. Dah’ren Mohran

  • First appearance: Monster Hunter 4 (2013)

Jhen Mohran's distant family that’s pretty distinct in both appearance and temperament. First, an adult Dah'ren Mohran can grow much larger than Jhen Mohran reaching 114 meters. Second, Dah'ren only has one large horn that is used to destroy all objects in front of it while diving in sand. Third, its minerals-covered body made its body to be rougher and very sharp. And the final difference, Dah'ren Mohran is much more aggressive and ready to destroy anything or anyone if it feels its life is threatened -- in fact it often storms into towns after destroying the Desert Ships that attacked it.

6. Zorah Magdaros

  • First appearance: Monster Hunter: World (2018)

Nicknamed the Scorching Mountain Dragon, Zorah Magdaros is a semi-aquatic Elder Dragon with a back covered in a large shell with a shape resembling a volcano created from the lava-like dregs, left over from its diet. Through this shell Zorah Magdaros is able to regulate its body temperature and release excess heat from within its body. It is not an aggressive monster and many small monsters live on its shell.

Not much is known about the 257 meter long Elder Dragon other than it lives underground and underwater. As it nears its end, it will travel to the New World as its final resting place.

With its enormous size, Zorah Magdaros can easily destroy any obstacle that stands in its way. While crossing the Great Ravine, it created a huge gap that opened up another part of the New World and allowed other monsters to roam freely. However, the greatest danger to this monster is actually when it dies. When it dies, Zorah Magdaros will release all the bioenergy in its body into a huge explosion capable of changing and destroying the entire ecosystem around it. Even though the death of a single Zorah Magdaros has tremendous destructive power, the bioenergy it left behind would cause the activity of other monsters to increase as well.

5. Dalamadur

  • First appearance: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (2015)

A serpent-like dragon with an astonishing body size, reaching 440 meters. Dalamadur usually nests on the highest peak of Heaven's Mount, known as the Speartip Crag. It has two strong clawed arms to support the body when climbing or digging. Its every move as it crosses mountains would create a huge avalanche.

Meanwhile, its forked tongue can secrete a substance to paralyze Hunters who try to fight it and spit out a mysterious fire from its jaws. It is thought that the fire was produced from the chest because Dalamadur's chest would ignite and emit steam when angry, indicating a very high body temperature. In addition, Dalamadur has the mysterious power to summon meteors. For unknown reasons, a number of Dalamadurs sometimes emerge from underground at certain times, which is usually followed by the arrival of a Shah Dalamadur.

4. Shah Dalamadur

  • First appearance: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (2015)

Dalamadur after molting is known as Shah Dalamadur. Its appearance is easy to distinguish from the red spikes on its back and the much lighter orange skin color. As a result of molting, Shah Dalamadur loses control of its metabolism, and its body temperature will continue to change. When cold, the skin becomes very hard; while when hot it becomes soft and easy to damage. It also gives it a new power, namely the ability to burn the ground with just the touch of its very hot skin.

Although the figure of Shah Dalamadur is thought to only exist in legend, its appearance scares many people because it is considered a harbinger of impending chaos.

3. Laviente

  • First appearance: Monster Hunter Frontier Season 7 (2009)

Like Dalamadur, Laviente is a giant snake monster. Measuring up to 450 meters, its skin is orange and green and it has a pair of tusks. In contrast to its patterned back, the skin on its belly is a smooth white. Not much is known about this one monster but like Deviljho, it seems it has a fast metabolism so it always feels hungry and devours everything that can enter its mouth. When not hunting for food, Laviente usually hibernates for a long time underground or underwater.

Not only has a body the size of a mountain, Laviente is capable of spewing fireballs, releasing explosive powders, and creating volcanic geyser eruptions and raining large stones when digging into the ground.

2. Violent Laviente

  • First appearance: Monster Hunter Frontier Forward.1 (2011)

When feeling very hungry, Laviente's body turns gray in color and its stomach becomes slightly darker while its scales and other body parts turn greenish. Other than that there wasn't much of a difference other than its attacks and movements becoming fiercer due to its hunger pang.

1. Berserk Laviente

  • First appearance: Monster Hunter Frontier G9 (2015)

Laviente's last form is the Berserk Laviente, when it woke up from its hibernation. Although not as vicious as Violent Laviente, it is still as dangerous because its attacks become more varied. Its body color is now a mixture of black, dark blue, and dark gray, its tusks are curved to the sides instead of upwards, and several yellow crystals grew along its back and head.
