The creator of the manga Apothecary Diaries, Nekokurage, also known by her real name Erika Ikeda, is entangled in a quite controversial legal case. On February 29th 2024, the Fukuoka Regional Tax Office charged Nekokurage with failing to report income of around 260 million yen (around Rp. 26 billion) and evading taxes of around 47 million yen (around Rp. 4.7 billion) from 2019 to 2021.
According to a report from the National Tax Office, the tax-evaded money, which includes income from sales of the manga Apothecary Diaries, was used to buy real estate.
Nekokurage's response to this accusation was then conveyed via the social media platform Twitter or X. They claimed that their negligence in tax reporting was caused by a lack of knowledge. Nekokurage added that they had paid the taxes and fees owed in 2022 after receiving instructions from the tax office, although they did not declare any previous income.
They also stated that they had requested assistance from a tax accountant to ensure that the correct tax filings were made. Furthermore, Nekokurage emphasized that this matter is their personal matter and has nothing to do with the original author of the light novel The Apothecary Diaries or anyone involved in making the manga.
The Apothecary Diaries manga itself was first published in Square Enix's Monthly Big Gangan magazine in May 2017. The 13th volume of this manga series was then published by Square Enix on March 25th 2023. This series has also been translated into English by Square Enix Manga.
Meanwhile, the original story of Apothecary Diaries first began as Natsu Hyuga's work on the Shosetsuka ni Narō" (Let's Become Novel Writers) website in October 2011. The novel was later adapted into print form with illustrations by Touko Shino, which began publishing by Shufunotomo in August 2014. J-Novel Club also released this novel series in digital format.
The success of Apothecary Diaries is not only limited to its manga and novel forms. This light novel series also inspired an anime adaptation that premiered on October 21st 2023. With the first three episodes, the anime was broadcast over two cours (half a year period).
Crunchyroll, a leading anime streaming platform, is simulcasting the anime as it airs in Japan and also provides an English dubbed version. Netflix also broadcasts this anime series. The presence of this anime has even resulted in the announcement of a second season which is scheduled to air in 2025.
While the legal case involving Nekokurage has certainly created a stir among fans and the manga and anime industry, it is important to note that this legal matter is a private matter and separate from their artwork. Hopefully this problem can be resolved fairly and transparently.
As fans, we can continue to enjoy Nekokurage's works such as Apothecary Diaries while still providing support and appreciation for their works which have inspired many people around the world.
