When Luffy and Coby met with each other for the first time, they were just little rascals. Luffy, who was just starting his journey had no friends, and Coby who aspires to become a Marine soldier was still a slave to Alvida. But now, they’ve both become significant and powerful men. Will there be a clash between Luffy vs. Coby in the future?

In One Piece episode 879, Coby who hasn’t been getting a share in the story for a long time is shown, helping King Riku and Rebecca from pirates. They’re on their way to Reverie to attend the royal meeting. Inadvertently, Coby sees Luffy’s wanted poster in the news that Rebecca’s holding. He feels glad and moved to see Luffy’s big progress.

Though when they first met, Luffy was a nobody. He was just a little kid with an almost unrealistic dream, becoming a Pirate King. However, after being regarded as the Fifth Emperor of the Sea, Luffy is getting closer to his dream of becoming a Pirate King. Likewise, Coby and Helmeppo who went through ruthless training by Garp have now become bold Marine soldiers.

In fact, Luffy had met Coby in Water Seven after the Straw Hats fought against CP9. Luffy and Zoro were quite surprised to see Coby and Helmeppo’s significant improvements. Who would have thought that the dorky kid had now developed into a bold Marine Captain? During the big Battle of Marineford, Coby was also able to use Haoshoku Haki, although by accident. Could he be Luffy’s nemesis in the future?

The relationship between Coby and Luffy is somewhat similar to Garp and Roger’s, who were rivals. They were once close friends, but due to Coby’s line of work, he’s obliged to fight off pirates like Luffy. Although Roger and Garp were always on the different sides of the battle, eventually, Roger entrusted what he had to Garp, his arc-rival. Before being executed, Roger entrusted his son, Ace, to Garp.

Garp was initially reluctant, but Roger had great faith in Garp and believed that he would listen to his request as a best friend. Eventually, Garp took care of Ace and put him in Dadan’s safe hand while he sailed. In other words, Luffy inherited Roger’s passion, while Coby inherited Garp’s. This is why the writer speculates that near the end of One Piece’s storyline, Luffy will face Coby in a battle.

Undoubtedly, this would be so interesting since they both have made remarkable progress. Plus, Coby is also one of the users of Haoshoku Haki. What an epic and dramatic fight that would be like!
