The Esports “boom” in the last three years has attracted many to form a new Esports team. Yet assembling and running an Esports team isn’t an easy task, at least that is what is felt by the two founders of the two biggest Esports team in Indonesia today; Rex Regum Qeon (RRQ) and Evos Esport.

At the launching event of the mobile game, Esports King, in Jakarta, last Tuesday (25/2), Andrian Pauline, the CEO of RRQ shared the stage with the Co-Founder of Evos Esports, Hartman Harris. Both of them shared the joys and sorrows of building an Esports team in Indonesia.

Derived From The Love Of Games

Both Andrian and Hartman shared the same reason for the forming of RRQ and Evos. It derived from their love of the game, not the blinding amount of prizes or fame promised by Esports competitions.

Andrian further told that he formed RRQ long before the Esport boom was happening. The man who usually called as ‘AP’ explained that RRQ was formed in 2013 purely based on the passion toward the game, not aiming for championship titles. Especially that back in that year the Esports competition scene in Indonesia was still quiet.

Luckily at that time, AP wasn’t alone, he had the support of the founder of the game publisher, Qeon Interactive, Riki Kawano Suliawan. Despite the support given by Riki, it didn’t necessarily mean RRQ sailed smoothly since Riki himself got some obstacles in forming RRQ.

“Riki’s parents have protested once. ‘Why is the house used for people playing games?’,” said AP, laughing. The house that’s located in an elite area in Jakarta is even equipped with high-speed internet, complete with a housemaid and security personnel. No wonder that Riki’s parents had doubts about their child’s decision.

Hartman also shared the same struggle. The man who claimed to be a die-hard fan of the Counter-Strike series admitted if he didn’t have any intention of forming a well-known Esports team in Indonesia. He confessed that he was “just” planning on forming a game developer company.

But Hartman’s initial plan did not go smoothly. Not wanting to leave the game world he loves, Hartman had formed a game league where Esports teams compete. “But back then, from nine teams that competed, one of them is RRQ, while the rest are teams that were assembled from internet cafes that would disperse after the competition. So, eventually, I decided to make an Esports team as well,” explained Hartman.

However, Hartman soon realized that forming an Esports team wasn’t as easy as he thought, because there were many athletes that needed to be taken care of. “One player only wants to eat meat, one only wants chicken, while the other one only wants vegetarian,” Hartman revealed half-jokingly.

The Fruition Of Their Love Of The Game

Armed with their deep love toward games, RRQ and Evos formed by AP and Hartman managed to become Esports teams with a myriad of achievements. From having just Dota 2 division on its early days in 2013, RRQ now has seven game-divisions; Mobile Legend, PUBG Mobile, Free Fire, COD Mobile, FIFA, Fortnite, and Auto Chess.

Of those seven, the PUBG Mobile and Mobile Legend divisions are the source of medals for RRQ by repeatedly winning championships at both national and international levels. Not only that, but RRQ also has successfully spread its wings abroad by recruiting foreign players.

Despite its younger age, Evos does not want to be left behind when it comes to winning achievement. Exists in Indonesia and Thailand with six game-divisions, this team even has the gut by claiming itself as the number one Esports team in Southeast Asia on its official website page. In terms of achievements, this team certainly is up there with the Evos Mobile Legends team that managed to become the best in the world as the latest evidence.
