James Wan, director of the horror film "The Conjuring" starring Patrick Wilson, dominated the horror genre in the 2010s by releasing three films in the main series and numerous spin-off films. However, two years before "The Conjuring", there was "Insidious", another project by Wan that also starred Wilson.

The first two films in the series focus on the haunting of the Lambert family, which besides Wilson as Josh, also includes his wife Renai (Rose Byrne), their son Dalton (Ty Simpkins), and two other children. Josh and Dalton both have the ability to astral project, sending their consciousness into a realm called The Further, but doing so leaves their bodies vulnerable to other entities entering the realm of the living.

The third and fourth films are prequels focusing on Lin Shaye's psychic character Elise, but Insidious: The Red Door continues the Lambert family story nearly a decade after "Insidious: Chapter 2," with Wilson not only returning to play the main role but also made his directorial debut.

The father and son have their memories erased at the end of the second film, but in the fifth film, they return to The Further one last time. Like most "Insidious" movies, it involves some spooky ghosts, multiple timelines reversed, and a demon with a red face who has a penchant for playing old records.

"Insidious: The Red Door" itself concludes the Lambert family's journey into the afterlife, but the way it's executed leaves some questions for fans, especially horror movie fans who may not remember the rest of the series. Let's take a look at the ending of "The Red Door" and what it all means.

What to remember about the plot of Insidious: The Red Door

"Insidious: The Red Door" begins nine years after Josh and Dalton Lambert erased their memory of The Further. Josh and Renai have divorced, Josh's mother has died, and Dalton is leaving for college. Josh is struggling, re-evaluating his relationship with those he loves. She drives a bad mood Dalton to school, but they get into a fight when they get to the dorms; while Josh admits that he has been feeling clouded for a while, Dalton is not interested in the excuses.

At home, Josh tries to figure out what's wrong. He did an MRI and had visions of lights going out. A ghost in a hospital gown attacks him in the MRI machine, but the doctor says he is just asleep. The results came back clean, and the doctor suggested playing memory games to help strengthen his mind. When he does, another ghost explodes through a window and attacks him, sending him on a journey to learn about his own father.

On campus, Dalton—an art student—draws a mysterious red door that he feels connected to his childhood. At a frat party with his new friend Chris (Sinclair Daniel), Dalton encounters a vomiting ghost who warns him, "Shut the door!" Dalton begins experimenting with astral projection as he uncovers memories of what happened to him when he was young, and a familiar demon with a red face begins to take notice.

What happened at the end of Insidious: The Red Door?

Dalton finishes his painting and realizes that his father once attacked the family with a hammer. Traveling to The Further, he witnesses the second film's climax—Josh, possessed by The Bride in Black, threatens the family in the basement. In the present, the Lipstick-Faced Devil grabs Dalton and ties him up in his lair, taking control of his body in the real world and attacking Chris.

At the same time, Josh talks to Renai, who finally tells him what happened years ago. They realize Dalton is in danger, and Josh travels to The Further to save him. The devil saw what was going on and left Dalton's body to pursue father and son through The Further. They escape through the red door, but demons start destroying it.

Josh sends Dalton away, repeating his own father's suicide note: "It ends with me." Back in the real world, Dalton removes his red door painting, causing the real door in The Further to turn black and trapping the demon. Wandering in the dark, Josh encounters the ghost of his father, who put down the lantern before disappearing in "Insidious: The Red Door" Final Insight.

Like most "Insidious" movies, it involves some horrifying evil spirits, multiple twisted timelines, and a demon with a red face and an old record.

What does the end of Insidious: The Red Door mean?

Overall, the ending of "Insidious: The Red Door" reveals that there is an ongoing cycle of suffering within the Lambert family, which started with Josh's father and now ends with Josh and Dalton. This story reveals that the red door in Dalton's painting is symbolic for the door to The Further which was opened by Josh's father and now finally closed by Dalton.

On top of that, there's also strong symbolism in Josh's last words before he decides to trap himself and the devil in The Further: "It ends with me." This indicates that Josh is taking responsibility for his family's legacy and trying to protect Dalton from the same fate. This also indicates the end of the red-faced demon's influence over the Lambert family.

However, the ending of this film also leaves some questions. For example, we don't know what happened to Josh after he got stuck in The Further. Is he still alive in some form, or is he really dead? And what happened to Dalton after he closed the red door? Will he be able to carry on with his life as usual, or will he continue to be haunted by his experiences?

Despite some ambiguity, the ending of "Insidious: The Red Door" essentially provided closure to Lambert's story and potentially set the stage for new stories in the Insidious franchise in the future. While it's hard to say for sure what will happen next, we can hope that this franchise will continue to provide horror stories that are both interesting and chilling.
