PlayStation still seems to want to jump into the trend of handheld gaming devices such as the Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, and ASUS ROG Ally. Now there is news circulating that they will revive the PlayStation Portable (PSP). Previously, Sony PlayStation had introduced the PlayStation Portal which could only be used for streaming via the Remote Play feature on PS5, not playing games independently.
Citing WCCF Tech, the newest PlayStation Portable will have performance that can play PS4 class games. This suggests that Sony PlayStation is targeting performance on par with the Steam Deck or Asus ROG Ally, not the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch itself is known for its ported versions of popular games and rarely features heavy AAA class games.
Rumors about the newest PlayStation Portable first circulated on the ResetERA forum by Russian journalist, Anton Logvinov. He previously leaked plans for exclusive PlayStation games to come to PC. Logvinov claims that Sony PlayStation is preparing a new PlayStation Portable capable of playing PS4 games. He also mentioned that the games that will be released at the same time as the official announcement will only be games that are also available on PC and Steam Deck.
Last February, it was also circulated that a custom version of the APU type processor from AMD was designed for PS4 and PS5 game compatibility. AMD is known to have an APU processor for handheld gaming, namely the AMD Ryzen Z1 Series. However, Logvinov did not discuss PS5 game support, so the compatibility feature with PS5 games may be introduced later if the latest PSP is realized.
Currently, almost all brands in the gaming industry are releasing handheld gaming devices, such as Lenovo Legion Go and MSI Claw. This indirectly acknowledges that the Nintendo Switch was the originator of the handheld gaming era, regardless of the performance of current smartphones for playing games.
