In 2020, we have some of the most popular games. From MOBA, FPS, Battle Royale, to MMORPGs. Among the many game genres available, some managed to find their spots, some were starting to fade away. 

Now, as the new year approaches, which genres will be able to rise into prominence, and which will remain popular in 2021? Here’s our prediction!

5. Survival

Survival is a genre that invites players to try to keep alive and withstand the dire situation that happens in the game. Whether it’s a deadly plague, a natural disaster, or a mix of several factors. 

To survive, usually, the main character has to obtain/create items to achieve the objectives. You will be required to craft these items from materials to help the main character to go through the hardship in the game. 

4. First Person Shooter (FPS)

Call of Duty Mobile is one of the most popular games in 2020, and certainly the most popular in terms of a mobile FPS game. This game is the fruition of a collaboration between Tencent and Activision. 

While the hype isn’t as big as last year, Garena still has big ambitions in CODM to bring Indonesian athletes to compete on the international stage. One of which is the CODM World Championship 2020.

3. Battle Royale

Bigetron RA’s success in representing Indonesia on the international stage surely deserves some appreciation. It proves that Indonesia’s PUBG Mobile teams are not the ones to be trifled with. 

Speaking of battle royale, Free Fire, is also hugely popular, even winning an award as the Best Mobile Game at the 2020 Esports Award.

Based on the number of tournaments Indonesian teams have won in this genre, Battle Royale will probably still popular, especially in 2021. 

2. Multiplayer Role-Playing Game

PC MMORPGs are indeed dying, yet it’s not the case in the mobile platform. In mobile (Android and iOS), MMORPG has found its spot, with a lot of new MMORPGs being released every day on mobile. 

Apart from that, the devs are amassing an enormous amount of money from gacha pulls. This feature makes players willingly spend money to get high-rarity level characters.

1. Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA)

Due to the success Mobile Legends has achieved in the last couple of years, MOBA games will definitely still be popular in 2021. Plus, in early 2021, Riot Games will release a full-version of Wild Rift for mobile players.

The arrival of Wild Rift into the MOBA market in Indonesia will surely get a great reception from gamers, considering Mobile Legends has no real competition this whole time, except for Garena’s AOV.
